In 2010, the Humane Society of the United States used Missouri’s initiative petition process to pass Proposition B. Thankfully, then-Senator Mike Parson and other legislative leaders stepped in to correct its damaging provisions. Amendment 6 could make that nearly impossible.
Even the most minor change would require 80% approval in BOTH chambers of the Missouri General Assembly, followed by another statewide vote. Even if legislators recognized a devastating threat to Missouri agriculture, their hands could be tied. Meanwhile, deep-pocketed national animal rights organizations would be waiting to fight us at the ballot box.
For nearly two decades, Missouri’s agricultural organizations have stood united through Missouri Farmers Care to defend our industry. We cannot surrender that progress. Even more alarming, Amendment 6 reaches back to 2010, raising serious questions about its consequences for agriculture.
Missouri agriculture has fought too hard and come too far to hand over its future.
