This National Farmers Day- check out how Ozarks Food Harvest has built partnerships with local growers to serve their neighbors.

We celebrate the dedication of farmers to feed and support their communities today, and year-round.

For National Farmers Day, we want to tell you a bit about how local farmers help end hunger in southwest Missouri.

Farmers already work early mornings and long days to grow the food we eat every day, but they also have a heart for giving back. Ozarks Food Harvest partners with more than 50 local farms and gardens, like Family Through Faith, who donate fruits and vegetables for our neighbors facing hunger.

When these partner farms grow too much produce or don't have the hands to harvest all of their crops, that food doesn't go to waste. The farmers contact Ozarks Food Harvest, who sends volunteers to glean the produce and deliver it directly to our partner charities in southwest Missouri. Many farmers designate a row of crops specifically for Ozarks Food Harvest at the beginning of the season.

We also partner with the Greater Springfield Farmers Market to collect excess produce from vendors at the market.

Last fiscal year, all of our partner farms and farmers market vendors donated a total of 87,000 pounds of fresh produce to help end hunger in the Ozarks! That produce meant seniors had nutritious greens on their plates, kids could try new vegetables, and families had well-rounded meals during tough times.

A huge thank you to Family Through Faith, Fassnight Creek Farm, Temple Israel, Victory Garden, the Greater Springfield Farmers' Market, and so many more who help our neighbors facing hunger access fresh produce.

This month, Empower Missouri held their annual Anti-Poverty Summit. At the gathering, they honored 7 people and organizations whose work demonstrates the difference that sustained advocacy can make.

Harvesters - The Community Food Network was recognized for their advocacy work.

Of Harvesters, they said:

“Through its advocacy and its network of community partners, Harvesters has helped make sure the realities of hunger are part of conversations about food security, from the people experiencing it firsthand to the policymakers making decisions about it.”

We are proud to have their work, passion and expertise in our network.

What is Partner State Association or PSA?

Great question. We’d love to tell you.

We often refer to ourselves as the “coalition of Feeding America food banks”. Through our 6 network Food Banks, we serve all 114 Missouri counties and the City of St. Louis. We work to build statewide relationships and create opportunities for Food Banks to get more food to more people. Our statewide approach to coordination among the six regions ensures all Missouri neighbors have access to food.

We do this in a few key ways:

✅ Disaster Planning and Coordination
✅ Policy Advocacy
✅ Statewide Resource Development
✅ Strategic Partnerships

Feeding Missouri is excited to be convening this week with 21 other PSAs from across the nation to learn more about innovative approaches to this important work.

We were grateful to welcome Governor Mike Kehoe to Second Harvest Community Food Bank and show him the work happening every day to make sure Missourians have access to the food they need.

During his visit, the Governor shared that he experienced food insecurity as a child. That personal experience brought an important perspective to the conversation about what food assistance can mean for a family — not just a meal, but a bridge through a difficult season.

We appreciate the Governor’s leadership in recognizing the power of public-private partnerships to strengthen our communities. When government, businesses, nonprofits, farmers, retailers and community organizations work together, we can bring resources to food banks and, most importantly, our Missouri neighbors.

For the Feeding Missouri network of food banks, our goal is not simply to help people through a hard time, but to be part of a community of support that helps people get back to stability.

Thank you, Governor Kehoe. We’re grateful for your commitment to partnerships that help ensure no Missourian has to face a difficult season alone.

Our Food Banks are working hard each day to deliver healthy, nutritious food to our neighbors. Through innovative partnerships and building trusted relationships in the communities they serve, Food Banks are are helping build a healthier Missouri.

St. Louis Area Foodbank is at the forefront of these efforts, building a bridge between healthcare and food access.

We are lucky to have experts like Tina in our network.

Our network could not distribute the over 170 Million pounds of food across Missouri without the faithful service and partnership of our partner agencies.

Everyday, they greet our neighbors with kindness and the resources they need.

Today, partner agencies gathered with The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri to receive support, education and updates that will allow them to continue to meet neighbors in their communities.
