Another special feline has become a part of HAAL, except he hasn’t been in the shelter yet. A colony feeder found friendly Viktor after he disappeared for a few days. He came back with leg weakness and unable to move freely. We decided to take him in as a HAAL cat to give him a fighting chance. You see Viktor was a TNR but should never have been returned to field . He was too friendly and not afraid of cars. It turns out that Viktor was hit by a car which caused damage to his tail, legs and he was unable to urinate. He was blocked. Over the past two weeks he has made some progress and has been able to produce small amounts of urine. We do not know how much Viktor will improve but we are doing everything we can to help . He is currently at the Cameron Animal Hospital under the care of Dr. Houston. And once again we are asking for help. These special cats do take a toll on our finances and we have 50 other cats in our care. If you can please consider giving a donation.

We don’t set out to find special needs kitties, but somehow they find us. This poor soul was found by some good samaritans and they brought her to HAAL. Not knowing what was wrong with her, we made the decision to at least try to help her get stable. She was cold to the touch, shaky, emaciated, dehydrated and filthy. She could have had anything from a virus, to diabetes, kidney, thyroid problems and even poisoning. We did what we knew how to do. We gave her warmed fluids, a heating pad that she could move away from if she got too warm, Nutrical, and we started her on antibiotics right away. We were contact with our vet, Dr. Houston, the whole time. We syringed fed her as much as she would tolerate . Honestly we didn’t think she would make it through the night.
But the next morning she was still with us. We gave her more warmed fluids, antibiotics, and continued to syringe feed her. Little by little we noticed that she was fighting. She started to take a few bites of her food and then would lay down in exhaustion, but it was a start. When she went to the vet on Monday we discovered that her front teeth were broken and infected. Bloodwork showed that her kidney values were very high as was her white blood cells. The kidney issues were more than likely from the dehydration, starvation and infection . We are not sure if the teeth were the source of the infection but it was a possibility . This told us she had a fighting chance . Her name is Reba and she is a survivor . She started at 4 pounds 3 oz, and today she weighed in at 5 pounds 4 oz in a little over a week!! We continue to treat her with fluids and antibiotics and we are starting to see her little personality shine through. Today she purred for the first time . We will continue to be by her side and make sure she gets everything she needs. She is safe, warm and getting stronger everyday.

We are starting the Reba fundraiser today. It’s not just for Reba but for all the cats at HAAL. We know that times are tight and the shelter has also felt the financial squeeze this year. Adoptions and donations are down and the request for intakes are up. We need you help to keep us going. Please consider giving a donation today. Happy Labor Day Weekend!! HAAL will be closed to the public today, Sunday Sept. 6, 2026 so our volunteers can spend some time enjoying the holiday. Each year our volunteers give hundreds of hours of themselves to take care of the cats and the shelter. We couldn’t do what we do without their sacrifice of time, energy, and love.

Look at these two gorgeous cats!! Meet Sir Richard Pennington III and Lief. These boys weren’t looking too good after joining us and were quickly diagnosed with wet form FIP . As little as 6 years ago these boys would not have survived. But they were treated with GS44 and are thriving . They are currently completing their 3 month post treatment observation period and will be up for adoption in the fall. They have a sister (short haired ) who did not get sick but has been with them through the entire process. We are hoping that there is a family out there that might consider taking all three. They are very bonded with each other . They are friendly, playful and just so sweet.
