Lemko-OOL

Lemko-OOL OOL is the acronym for "Orhanizatsiia Oborony Lemkivshchyny" which is formally registered as "Organization for Defence of Lemko Western Ukraine".

Forms of Activity:
1. Establish Branches in communities where large numbers of Lemko Ukrainians live.
2. Publish periodicals and books, maintain libraries, museums, resort centers, theater ensembles, sport groups, and the like.
3. Organize conventions, meetings, excursions, and other activities.
4. Sponsor various activities and programs for members and the public-at-large.
5. Familiarize the

public with issues concerning Lemko, Pidlyashya, and the Syan and Kholm regions.
6. Work with other Ukrainian organizations in the U.S.
7. Organize moral and material support for Lemko Ukrainians who reside in Lemko, Pidlyashya, and the Syan and Kholm regions, as well as natives of those regions who now live within the borders of present-day Ukraine and in other countries.
8. Provide scholarships for students, gather funds for publishing purposes.
9. Secure movable and immovable property.

OOL Offers Scholarship for U.S. Students of Lemko Ancestry

The Organization for the Defense of Lemkivshchyna (OOL) is offering scholarship awards for the 2026-2027 academic year. Successful applicants will each receive a scholarship of $500.

To qualify, students must meet the following requirements:
-Be of Lemko ancestry.
-Be enrolled as a full-time student in any year (i.e., freshman through senior) of an undergraduate program or trade school.
-Be a member of OOL (applying for OOL membership in parallel is allowed).
-Be a legal U.S. resident.
-Submit a 500-word essay on one of the essay topics below.

1) 2026 is the 90th anniversary of OOL's First Lemko Congress in Philadelphia on June 6, 1936. What do you think has enabled OOL to endure nine decades of defending and promoting Lemko-Ukrainian issues, and what would you want OOL to accomplish by its 100th anniversary?
2) Describe a Lemko tradition, song, recipe, object, or family story that has been passed down to you. What does it reveal about where your family came from, and how will you carry it forward?
3) Lemkivshchyna lies in the Carpathian Mountains, far from where Lemko Americans live today. Whether or not you have visited, what does the Lemko region mean to you and how do you think young Lemko Americans can build and maintain a living connection to it?
