Tournament Namesake: The late and great Ruth Bedford was the quintessential philanthropist to many, including the Bureau, where she served on the Board of Directors for decades, served as Board President, and named Lifetime Trustee in 2013. As we’re organizing the first annual tournament, it is fitting to name it in Ruth’s honor to remember her good nature, spirited personality and her philanthropy.

Tournament Rules & Format of Play:
The Bedford is a four ball match play tournament using 100% handicap from the White Tees. If you don’t have a handicap we’ll fashion one for you. Each team is 2 golfers, so grab somebody who would enjoy what we’ve put together for you. A flight is a group of 4 teams. There are 9 flights in the tournament for a total of 72 golfers. Each team will play one 6-hole match against each of the other 3 teams in their flight. Flights will be determined by a team’s combined handicap index, (or by flights of friends/golf buddies since each flight contains 8 golfers). Scorecards will be marked off to show who is getting strokes at each hole.

Each hole is worth one point. The lowest net score from either team member wins the hole. If the lowest net score on each team is tied, each team wins ½ a point for each. The overall 6-hole match is worth 1 additional point making the overall match worth a total of 7 points. At the completion of the three round robin matches a flight winner will be determined on the basis of the highest point total within the flight.

Teams must be ready to play at their assigned time. If one member of the team is not present at their starting time, their partner shall continue play. If one team is on the tee and their opponent is not there, they shall play winning each hole started (both players having driven off and left the tee prior to the arrival of their opponents) until their opponents have caught up with them. If both teams fail to show at their assigned time. Both teams will receive zero (0) points.

Flight Winner Tiebreaker:
In the case of a tie for first place between teams, cards will be matched to see who won the head-to-head match between them. If there is still a tie, the winner will be the team with the best match score.

Flight Winner Playoff:
Each of the 9 flight winners, plus the best scoring second place team will participate in a playoff. The first group of 5 winning teams will play the third hole in alternate shot format, with the best two scores advancing while the last 3 do not. Then the second group of 5 winning teams will do the same. In the event of a tie there will be a chip-off. The four advancing teams will play the second hole in alternate shot format – best score wins. If there is a tie for first place, the 2nd hole gets replayed between those teams until there is a winner. (The 3rd hole tee box and the 2nd hole green are in front of the Clubhouse 2nd floor balcony and the ground level bar and firepit for the perfect viewing area – the roar of the crowd can be heard in Bloomfield).

The Nutley Family Service Bureau: https://www.nutleyfamily.org/

This is the ideal way to raise money for an exceptional charity, by providing golf-lovers a challenging and fun, one-day tournament where each golfer achieves their own score (not a scramble), at a country club course.
