Opened since July 2014, Upcycle Parts Shop is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit located in Cleveland’s St. Clair/Superior neighborhood.

“Provoke creativity and promote community through reuse, resourcefulness, and relationships” is the core of our mission. We do this by keeping creative materials out of the waste stream and get them back into the hands of our city’s people for another chance at fulfilling th

eir potential. We accept these donations from local manufacturers, businesses, and people like you looking to relieve themselves of material weight. Then we offer them for sale at low costs or use them in our programming endeavors. Essentially, we’re an art supply store full of interesting materials finished with their first lives that are waiting for you to begin their second, or third, or fourth! We also offer creative workshops and community crafting stations throughout Northeast Ohio. Our goal is to function as a social enterprise, meaning we’re committed to doing good for our neighborhood, for our people, and for the world. Just wrapped the first half of our spring season of Saturdays on St. Clair! We have learned amazing upcycling skills through these free workshops and want to send a big THANK YOU to our fantastic instructors Rochelle Schiffbauer Em Poor .with.em David Van Horn and Megan Smith .9 for putting together engaging and educational workshops! THANK YOU to all the folks who attended and took home new ideas to add to your toolbox. And THANK YOU to Cuyahoga County residents and for supporting Upcycle Parts Shop through grant funding that has helped us receive $31,465 since 2023! More FREE workshops on the way in July!

Upcycle Parts Shop is proud to offer our FREE Saturdays on St. Clair Workshop Series, designed for our community to explore creative reuse, learn upcycling techniques, and see everyday materials in a new way.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
“The Wonderful World of Plarn”
In this workshop with Megan Smith .9, participants will learn how to cut and tie plastic grocery bags to make their own skein of plarn (plastic yarn) and start a weaving project. 

Welcome to the Wonderful World of PLARN! Plarn is plastic man made from disposable grocery bags. Once your grocery bags are cut and processed, the possibilities are endless! I love taking something that is disposable and transforming it into a materials that’s surprisingly durable and versatile.

FROM THE INSTRUCTOR:
My passion is sustainable art that is beautiful, functional, and makes others reimagine the materials around them.

Whenever I’m beginning a new piece of art, I always think of how I can go about this project in a sustainable way, and how can I use what I already own. Oftentimes, frugality and sustainability go hand-in-hand which is another reason why I love making art from recyclables, off-cuts, and trash. You don’t need to take a trip to the craft store or order that special material off of schmamazon…my creativity is most alive when I’m using the materials around me and problem-solving with what I have.

Mass production is never the goal! By prioritizing our planet in the production process, we open up a world of creativity and accountability.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
“No Sew Bookmaking”
In the No Sew Bookmaking Workshop with David Van Horn, participants will learn how to make two kinds of no sew books with upcycled materials. 

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Mx. David van Horn [He/Him] is an art educator and community organizer who’s been doing community work for more than 15 years in St. Clair Superior around youth in Libraries, parks, and at development corporations with many hats but focusing on the pillars of sustainable arts education with a roving listener approach to reach out to other pillars such as food, education and pedestrian safety.

His program was thought up as a way to do outreach to schools that had their arts programming cut or to offer to after school and senior centers as well as libraries as a way of engaging in what’s called third place-something that is neither home nor work-a place where people can learn a new skill or interact with others socially. It has expanded to be something that’s done both in and outside the classroom. This program is about teaching others about what can be done with materials that would usually be thrown away by way of arts and culture. This helps build communities and lessen barriers between culture and language.
