With warm weather finally here, let's talk about swimming safety for epilepsy.

A seizure that happens in any depth of water, shallow or deep, always requires a 911 call. Inhaling water during a seizure can cause illness, heart issues, or even drowning.

Never swim alone. Better still, only swim with people who know how to help if you have a seizure.

Stay hydrated and stop swimming before you get physically tired.

Have a safe and fun summer!

In observance of Memorial Day, the Epilepsy Association is closed.

We hope everyone who has this day off enjoys their parades and family get-togethers, but we also hope that you take a moment to remember the fallen men and women of our military.

Invite your friends and family to walk or run with you at Outrace Epilepsy! on August 16! Remember to tell them that kids 5 & under register for free, and everyone's registration comes with free admission to the zoo after the event!

The captain of the largest team will be presented an award after all of the 10K, 5K, and 1-mile runners/walkers finish. Last year, that honor went to Luke's Troops, with over 100 members!

Your team can also fundraise! Each team has a customizable page with a donate button that you can share. All proceeds go towards free programs for adults with epilepsy and families of a child with epilepsy.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, take time to check in on someone you know. You never know what someone is going through, and how much of a difference you can make.

People with epilepsy often feel isolated and are more likely than those without epilepsy to have a mental health condition. Someone struggling with their mental health is also at risk of increased or breakthrough seizures.

Even if they seem fine, take time this weekend to ask a friend or family member if they're doing okay or if they need to talk about their problems.

Struggling with epilepsy and mental health can be a vicious cycle. That's why the Epilepsy Association offers free programs for adults diagnosed with both. For Cuyahoga County residents, we offer case management to help with advocacy, resources, housing issues, and other support.

Our online Epilepsy Self-Management Class is open to anyone. The group meets on Zoom once a week to learn how to improve both their epilepsy and mental health, and talk to other adults with epilepsy. The next class starts in September.

If you're interested in these free programs, contact us at 216-579-1330 or [email protected]. If you are having a mental health crisis, call 988 for free, confidential support from a real person.

There's a lot of bad information out there when it comes to helping someone during a seizure. Many people were taught to pin them down to make them recover quicker. Not only is this false, but it can get you both hurt and make their symptoms during and after the seizure worse.

Even if you don't know anyone with epilepsy, you should still learn proper seizure first aid. 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lives. And seizures don't just happen in people with epilepsy. Someone without epilepsy could have one because of their medication side effects, a head injury, a fever, and more causes.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Epilepsy is not a mental health condition, but people who have epilepsy are at least twice as likely to struggle with their mental health. And it's a vicious cycle because depression, anxiety, and stress are all seizure triggers too. Worse mental health = worse epilepsy = even worse mental health.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Check on your friends, family, and coworkers.

If you are having a mental health crisis, call 988 to talk to someone. It's free and confidential.
