We were all taught this growing up.....but it's no longer the way we like to educate especially children. Dogs have an amazing sense of smell. They can smell a female dog in heat, miles away. So teaching children to stick their hand out to a strange dog really isn't necessary and can actually have the reverse effects on the dog. Some dogs have been punished by being hit by a human. So when they see you sticking your hand out they may cower or get defensive because they remember the hand causing them pain. They have smelled your scent before they ever got close to you so the extra 12 inches of your hand extending out isn't going to make a difference. Instead we want to teach people especially children to stand still, like a tree and ignore the dog, no attention, no eye contact. Let them check you out first. If they want you to interact with them they will let you know. But also if they walk away.....LET THEM!! Not every dog wants to meet new people. Let's give them that respect and normalize dogs being allowed to be DOGS 🐾

Ethel update!!
Our sweet girl had surgery this morning and she did have pyometra and a big tumor in her uterus. All were removed. Her liver, spleen and kidneys looked really good. She's staying all weekend to be kept on antibiotics, fluids and Dexamethasone because she was presenting with a back injury or something wasn't allowing her to walk. So hopefully the tumor was pressing on her spine or ????? No clue really. Thank you to those who donated. We took a chance and spent the last remaining funds we had because this girl had such a sh*tty life and she deserves to be treated like a queen for her end of life 🥰.

Mr. Goose is still waiting for his forever home. He gets along wonderfully with dogs, cats, and kids, making him a perfect fit for a busy family or a multi-pet household. Goose is both crate-trained and house-trained. With his love for the outdoors and adventurous spirit, he’d make an amazing hiking buddy or walking companion. This young boy Prescott was left abandoned in a home to fend for himself. He is about 2 years old and we are still getting to know him. He is shy and needs patience to get to know you then there is no personal space. We do know he likes other dogs, loves playing fetch and hiking. He is a little overwhelming with cats so it would have to be a dog smart cat. We do know no chickens or ducks. He walks well on leash and loves to snuggle. We will keep you posted. Meet Prescott

Dogs only have their voice to express how they are feeling. When a dog is uncomfortable with something or someone they will growl, to say " hey I'm not comfortable right now". This is their only way to communicate and they have every right to!! If you punish a growl they learn to be silent......a silent dog is a dangerous dog. We want our dogs to express if they Don't like something. Have you ever heard the expression " he just bit out of nowhere!"???? Well if a dog has been punished for telling his humans what he doesn't like you just created a ticking time bomb. Unless you can read minds ...... please don't punish the growl 🙏
