The MBKPF was created in honor of Dobama Theatre co-founder Marilyn Bianchi after her passing. For over 45 years, the MBKPF has recognized talented playwrights in grades 1-12 by providing a platform for Northeast Ohio youth to express their thoughts, hopes, dreams, and creativity through the writing of original plays.

"It is all highly abstract, it is incredibly theatrical and–astonishingly–it is still achingly, wonderfully realistic. ... That realism within Dobama Theatre’s Cleveland premiere of “Sanctuary City” infuses power into a timely narrative by provoking that element that is oh-so-essential for a piece based on social injustices and inadequacies: empathy. ... Under the direction of Dobama’s artistic director, Nathan Motta, “Sanctuary City” fits well within Dobama’s repertoire of deep, socially relevant shows that can deliver a laugh or smile as easily as they can suckerpunch your emotions."

SANCTUARY CITY by Martyna Majok and directed by Nathan Motta runs April 23 - May 17 on the Dobama stage.

This widely celebrated play received the 2023 Obie Award for Playwriting and was called “Stunningly beautiful and… emotionally immersive,” by The Chicago Sun-Times.

The New York Times said of Majok’s script, "I have rarely seen a play that so effectively embodies the way external forces - in this case, immigration policies in the United States—distort the inner lives of actual humans. What love is, and can ever mean, is lost in the muddle between the heart and the law."

For Sanctuary City, Dobama’s Full Circle Program is partnering with several organizations who provide services and support for immigrant communities: ACLU Ohio, Cleveland Heights for Immigrant Rights, Esperanza, Inc., and Margaret W. Wong & Associates. Representatives from these organizations will be participating in talkbacks after the performances on Saturday, May 2nd, May 9th, and May 16th, sharing about their work through a discussion of the themes of Sanctuary City . For more information on the Full Circle program, visit: dobama.org/full-circle.

Monday, April 27th - Don't miss the FREE reading of Dayshawnda Ash's new work.

This visceral, movement-driven play set in the South Bronx during the late 1970s, centers on Jamie a Black teenage girl coming of age. As the city burns around her—both literally and metaphorically—Jamie discovers dance as a language of survival, resistance, and self-definition.

Join us in the Dobama Arts Space. The reading begins at 7 PM. $15 suggested donation to support the Playwrights' GYM at Dobama Theatre.
