MISSING: 24-Year-Old Dad Traveled to Cleveland for a Football Game...The Next Morning, a Stranger Called His Mom From His Phone
Phoenix Phillips was excited.
The 24-year-old Maryland father was flying to Cleveland with a friend to watch his Pittsburgh Steelers play the Browns.
Before leaving, Phoenix messaged his mother from the airport.
He told her where he was going. who he was going with, and why.
Turns out they were heading to a football game.
His mother, Amanda Phillips, says she and her sons are extremely close. She communicated with Phoenix every day. She said they would talk throughout the day and night.
She said, “I always know his whereabouts.”
But sometime after the football game Thursday night, something changed.
Phoenix and the friend he'd traveled to Cleveland with became separated. According to Phoenix's mother, his friend eventually returned to their hotel.
Phoenix did not.
Instead, Phoenix remained out with other men they had met during the night.
At approximately 6 a.m. Friday, October 2, Phoenix was last seen in Cleveland in the area of West 10th Street, West Superior Avenue and Robert Lockwood Jr. Drive.
Then...he disappeared.
Phoenix's mother didn't know any of this yet. She had exchanged text messages with him after the football game Thursday night.
Then she went to bed.
At approximately 7:30 Friday morning, Amanda texted her son again.
There was no response.
Six minutes later, her phone rang.
The number was from Cleveland.
Amanda immediately thought, “This isn't good.”
She answered, but it wasn't Phoenix.
According to Amanda, it was one of the men Phoenix had met during the night.
The man had something belonging to her son.
Phoenix's phone.
Amanda says she was told Phoenix had dropped it and the man had found it.
Phoenix himself, was nowhere to be found.
By approximately 10 a.m. Friday, Phoenix had been reported missing.
Cleveland Police now describe the circumstances surrounding his disappearance as “Concerning.”
Phoenix had traveled to Cleveland from Maryland with a friend to attend the Pittsburgh Steelers-Cleveland Browns game on Thursday, October 1.
He's a devoted Steelers fan. His mother says he was excited about the trip.
But sometime after the game, Phoenix and the friend he traveled with became separated.
Amanda says she's since spoken with that friend, and according to her, he's devastated too.
She says the friend returned to the hotel while Phoenix stayed out with other people they had met that night.
Investigators are now trying to reconstruct exactly what happened afterward.
Where did Phoenix go?
Who was he with?
How did he become separated from his phone?
And what happened between the time he was last seen around 6 a.m. and the phone call to his mother at 7:36 a.m.?
Cleveland detectives have been searching the area where Phoenix was last seen.
They're looking for surveillance video, they're following tips, and they're trying to establish Phoenix's movements during those crucial early-morning hours.
His family isn't waiting at home in Maryland.
They came to Cleveland.
Amanda and her sister drove to Ohio on Saturday. They began handing out missing-person flyers.
They searched.
Additional relatives arrived early Tuesday morning to help.
Phoenix's uncle, Tom Porter said, “We're living through a nightmare right now.”
But he also made something clear.
They're not stopping.
Phoenix's family describes him as someone who doesn't give up on people.
So, they aren't about to give up on him.
Phoenix isn't only a missing 24-year-old.
He's the father of a 2-year-old little boy.
His mother describes him as a loving father, a successful business owner and someone who loves sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Phoenix is from the Maryland/Baltimore area and isn't familiar with Cleveland.
That makes the search particularly difficult.
Cleveland Missing is now working alongside his family while Cleveland Police continues its investigation.
Police say Phoenix may have been traveling on foot.
He is approximately:
6 feet, 1 inch tall.
170 pounds.
He has blue eyes and is described in current Cleveland Police information as having light/blond hair.
When he was last seen, Phoenix was reportedly wearing:
A gray hoodie.
Beige pants.
And:
White sneakers.
One detail circulating in reports needs clarification.
Some stories simply say Phoenix “became separated from the person he was with.”
His mother's account gives us considerably more context.
She says Phoenix and the friend he traveled to Cleveland with became separated during the night.
The friend returned to the hotel.
Phoenix remained out with other men they had met.
Then, after Phoenix disappeared:
One of those men reportedly found Phoenix's phone.
That phone has since been turned over to police, according to the family.
There is currently no public evidence that the friend Phoenix traveled with, or the people he met that night, were involved in his disappearance.
They are simply part of the timeline investigators are trying to reconstruct.
And right now, there is no publicly established explanation for where Phoenix went.
Police have not announced evidence that he was abducted, they haven't said he intentionally disappeared, and they haven't publicly identified anyone as a suspect.
What they have said is that the circumstances are concerning.
Phoenix's mother says his disappearance is completely out of character.
If you were in downtown Cleveland late Thursday night or early Friday morning, particularly around West 10th Street, West Superior Avenue or Robert Lockwood Jr. Drive, look at Phoenix's photograph.
Think about whether you saw him.
Check any photographs or videos you took that night.
And if you have surveillance or dash-camera footage from the area, please check it.
Someone may have captured the piece of this timeline that Phoenix's family desperately needs.
