Pets Return Home is a No-Kill sanctuary, rehabilitation center, and adoption center dedicated to giving homeless, abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs a genuine chance at life. Founded on compassion and fueled by commitment, we serve as a safe haven for dogs who have run out of options—those who have been failed by the system or people, or labeled as “unadoptable.”

Located in Northern Arizona, Pets Return Home is unique in both philosophy and practice. We provide an enriched, free-range environment where dogs learn to trust, play, and rediscover what it means to be a dog. We specialize in behaviorally challenged, medically complex, and senior dogs—those often left behind in traditional shelter systems. Our Mission
To save lives, enrich welfare, and build adoptability for homeless dogs, especially those who are behaviorally misunderstood or at risk of euthanasia. What Sets Us Apart
Free-Range Sanctuary Living – Our dogs are not confined to kennels 24/7. They live in structured, open environments where they can play, learn boundaries, and form bonds. Behavioral Rehabilitation – We work extensively with fearful, reactive, and unsocialized dogs, helping them become adoptable and safe. Lifetime Safety Net – Dogs who are not adoptable remain in our care for life—safe, loved, and free. No-Kill, No-Surrender Ethic – We are fiercely committed to protecting every life we take in. We do not give up on dogs because they are inconvenient. In-home Living – Dogs enjoy living in our home as they would in their own home. Who We Are
Mark Happe, a dedicated animal welfare advocate, is the founder and leader of Pets Return Home. The small, hardworking team of volunteers makes Pets Return Home more than just a shelter or rescue—it’s a promise. Our team includes on-site caregivers, volunteers, and veterinary partners who all believe every dog deserves a future. Achievements

Pets Return Home: Because every dog deserves to come home. Facility and Campus
Pets Return Home is located near Sedona, just outside Clarkdale, Arizona, on a seven-acre “dog ranch” surrounded by two national forests, a canyon, and the Verde River. The property offers a safe, serene, and stimulating environment where dogs can run free, decompress, and thrive. Most of the dogs enjoy full-time free-range access to the property, with plenty of space to play, den, socialize, and release anxiety. Over the last decade, we’ve made numerous capital improvements to create a facility that supports rehabilitation, enrichment, and adoption. Key features include:

6-00 sq. Medical Clinic – Designed for medication administration, preventive care, and treatment. Also serves as a hands-on training space for volunteers and adopters to learn essential medical care, helping reduce vet costs and deepen the human-animal bond.
-2,000 sq. Covered Nursery Facility – Houses five individual 200 sq. wards for pregnant dogs and their puppies, with separate areas to reduce stress, control disease, and enable healthy early socialization.
-200 sq. Covered “Doggie Condo” Area – Equipped with heaters in winter and shade and pools in summer for dogs who prefer staying outdoors.
-2,100 sq. Covered Kennel Facility – Contains ten 100 sq. luxury kennels, each with shelter, a raised bed, and automatic waterers. A misting system cools the area in summer, and high-powered heaters ensure warmth in winter.
-Twelve Fenced Play Yards – Offering nearly 6,000 sq. of running space, these yards provide shelter, soft footing, and free access to water.
-3,000 sq. Agility & Working Yard – Helps build confidence, provide mental stimulation, and strengthen the bond between dog and handler, while offering a fun and challenging activity.
-Three-Acre Enrichment Area – Distraction-free trails ideal for walking, training, and peaceful exploration for dogs and humans alike.
-Four Large Fenced Playgrounds – Accommodate up to 40 dogs at once to socialize, gain confidence, and practice manners, reducing reactivity and promoting adoptability.
-Water Features & River Access – Including small ponds and kiddie pools on-site, plus a 15-minute walk to the Verde River—great for teaching swimming and providing joyful enrichment.
800 sq. Workshop – Supports ongoing construction, repairs, and maintenance of the facility. Our facility and campus layout, set in a natural setting, encourages dogs to socialize, exercise, and rebuild trust—essential steps toward healing and adoption. Visitors, volunteers, and adopters are immersed in hands-on experiences that deepen understanding and relationships with the dogs. We are always in need of volunteers, especially those with trade skills, to help with repairs, maintenance, and enhancements. Visits are by appointment, and our operations are supported primarily by generous donations.

Our Buddy Taz Has Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

On August 4, 2026, our buddy Taz crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
It was unexpected, and it happened frighteningly fast. In only six weeks, he went from running around, enjoying life with us and the other dogs, to needing our help to end his suffering.

Taz came to Pets Return Home from the Nebraska Humane Society in 2020 to avoid euthanasia. Marcia Ward made the long drive from Nebraska to bring him here and give him another chance.

For the past five years, Marcia sponsored Taz every month, helped cover his medical expenses, supported the medical needs of other PRH dogs, and regularly sent him care packages filled with treats and toys for him to chew up and joyfully destroy. She loves Taz very much, and we are incredibly grateful that he had someone so devoted to him.

When Taz arrived, he struggled with aggression toward men and other dogs. Within about four weeks, he overcame his aggression toward men and eventually became one of our best greeters. He welcomed visitors with a smile and a wagging tail.

His unpredictable behavior around other dogs took several years of patient rehabilitation and careful management. He remained available for adoption for four years, attended many adoption events, greeted countless people, and showed everyone what a warm and loving dog he could be.

During the last 18 months of his life, Taz lived free-ranging on the campus with our pack of 20 to 40 dogs. He learned to trust them and respect them, and they respected him in return.
We were not prepared to lose him.

Taz was stoic and eager to please. Other than a limp, he showed us very little indication of how much he was suffering. When Dr. Scudder of Village Vet explained the X-ray results, we had to make the decision every person who loves an animal dreads.

We laid on the floor beside him as he passed. We held his paws, rubbed his ears, and held his body as his breathing stopped and his heart grew still.

The ranch is very quiet today. His Bedroom Pack seems to be waiting for him to come out and lead them onto the campus, just as he did every morning. They did not go out this morning for their AM run. They came back in the bedroom.

Taz would have turned eleven years old this month. It does not feel fair, and our hearts are broken.

We are grateful to everyone who loved him, supported him, visited him, walked with him, played with him, and helped him become the fine dog he was.

Taz came here because others believed his life should end.
Instead, he received six more years of love, care, friendship, toys, treats, sunshine, freedom, and belonging.

He did not leave this world unwanted or alone.
He left surrounded by his family.
Run free, buddy.
We love you, Taz. 🐾🌈❤️

Enjoy the pics of Taz as moments spent with him.

A Huge Thank-You to Four Amazing Volunteers!
Last Thursday, four volunteers from Animal Protectors of the Verde Valley came to Pets Return Home and helped clean our clinic.
The clinic was completely trashed by the flood, with dirt and dust covering everything. I was preparing to attack it with a pressure sprayer and shop vac. Elise firmly said, “NO!” Fortunately, Jeannie, Rosie, Martha, and Rashawn arrived—and somehow made the clinic look amazing again.
It is wonderful to have a clean, healthy space for the dogs that is finally free from all that flood dirt and dust.
Something else impressed us just as much: Before coming, these volunteers had apparently been “warned” by someone on social media that Pets Return Home—and Mark Happe—were mean and bad.
They came anyway.
They visited, worked beside us, met the dogs, and formed their own opinions. Before leaving, they told us they did not believe what they had been told.
Imagine that—people who check things out for themselves instead of simply repeating what someone else says. In today’s social-media world, that takes independence, fairness, and courage.
Thank you, Jeannie, Rosie, Martha, and Rashawn, for your hard work, your open minds, and your willingness to see Pets Return Home for yourselves. You are heroes to us—and to the dogs. 🐾❤️

Music, Generosity, and More Than $900 for the Dogs!
On Saturday, August 1, All She Wrote—featuring Caleb, Daniel, and Dave—held a benefit for Pets Return Home at the 10–12 Lounge.
We were incredibly honored to have such a talented band playing to support the dogs. Between donations from patrons at the event and gifts from online supporters, we raised more than $900!
This money will help us repair and improve the dogs’ outdoor areas following the flood, including adding more pools, comfortable dens, and better landscaping where they can relax, play, and feel secure.
Thank you to All She Wrote, the 10–12 Lounge, everyone who attended, and every person who donated online. Your generosity will make a real difference in the dogs’ daily lives.
The music was awesome—and there was another special milestone. It was the first time Elise and I had gotten off the ranch together since we were married on May 7!
We actually had fun, too! 😊
Thank you for giving us a much-needed evening away and, most importantly, for helping us continue caring for the dogs who depend on Pets Return Home. 🐾❤️

Volunteer Day This Saturday—We Need Your Help!

This Saturday, August 8, we are holding a Volunteer Day at Pets Return Home, and we are hoping for a great turnout.
Brandi Webb is bringing a skid steer—and her excellent project-management skills! Misailedes asked for a list of the remaining jobs, and as you can see below, there is plenty to do.

We need people who are willing to help move, clean, repair, dig, organize, and care for the dogs. One of our biggest projects will be removing the carpets from the play yards, cleaning the areas underneath, adding and compacting dirt, installing landscape fabric, and laying new ground covering or clean carpet so the dogs once again have comfortable places to rest.

You do not need to be skilled in everything. We need willing hands, teamwork, and people who care about helping the dogs recover from the flood.

Projects include:
• Deworming and bathing the dogs
• Cleaning dog beds and crates
• Repairing Rose’s bed
• Socializing, brushing, bathing, and walking the dogs—they are becoming depressed and need attention
• Removing and cleaning carpets from the dog areas
• Adding and compacting dirt
• Installing landscape fabric and new ground covering
• Installing water fountains in Cassie’s yard, Ammo’s yard, the garage, behind the house, and the isolation play yards
• Removing metal panels from the south sides of the isolation kennels
• Repairing dog water fountains and installing a pressure regulator
• Digging a hole and installing Rose’s pool drainpipe
• Installing a center pole in Ammo’s run
• Painting Cassie’s doghouse
• Installing irrigation valves so the shade trees do not die
• Connecting the back shade-tree irrigation line
• Cleaning all water fountains
• Cleaning out the material-storage box and discarding flood-damaged items
• Taking garbage and ruined materials to the dump
Please sign up through our website:

We hope to see you here. Even a few hours of your time can make the ranch safer, cleaner, and more comfortable for the dogs.
Thank you for helping Pets Return Home rebuild. 🐾

Attending and hosting events is a key component to finding forever homes for our dogs, fundraising and getting the word out about PRH.
