November 1998 Swatch Watch

8 Harness
Shadow Weave
Woven by Bea Nowicki
This handsome pattern is is one from “1,000 Plus Patterns in 4, 6, and 8 Harness” published by Robin & Russ Handweavers. It was woven with 2/12 worsted, which Bea believes would give a good strong fabric for upholstry, since it is a very firm weave. It is important that you use the proper dark or light thread at the right time in both warping and weaving. If you change one thread and get it in the wrong place, the pattern will look entirely different.

News from our dye and fiber Garden Crew. The flax is almost all dry and ready to process. This has been my first adventure retting the flax. Now that it’s been soaked and dried it amazing to see the fibers inside!

Swatch Watch
November, 1988

This is an early Christmas present from Ann, to jog you into thinking about weaving presents for the holidays. In January, 1984, Jeanette MacMillan, then chairman of the Swatch Watch, had presented this same pattern in harsh rug wools, with the suggestion at the end: “If a smaller yarn with denser sett was used the fabric would be great for clothing and upholstry or even table linens. If a very fine cotton or linen was used a border design on a guest towel would be great—red and white Christmas towels, for example, suggesting snow flakes.”
Using the unmercerized cotton, the pattern gives a good texture for hand towels. There is a good deal of shrinkage with this. Ann was surprised to see how much the large yardage shrank compared to the sample done first. Remember, the large loom will weave differently than the small one.

This was a draft found in an old weaving book in the library some years ago, and thought it interesting because it was simple, yet had a pleasant pattern. It is a soft weave because of the double threads, causing a basket weave. Yes, I know you hate the color scheme. So did Mary as she wove it. But, The entire yarn for the sample cost eleven dollars instead of the fifty-five! it would have cost for cotton yarn. You can do it in anything you want. Mary and I played with the idea of a tablecloth in cotton, or perhaps a beige and white linen window curtain. What would it look like in a wool in two close colors with knitted edges as a sweater? Being soft, it would make a lovely afghan. Enough?
Jean Mushovic helped with the weaving at our retreat at Grailville. The only problem was trying to control the beat to keep it square.

Today the Fledgling Weavers Study Group had a dye day and created hand painted warps. We cant wait to see the finished warps and then the final projects!
