There is a old saying that goes

"sticks and stones may break my bones, but words would never hurt me"

This is so far from the truth! Words matter, words hurt and the pain of someone words can stay with you long after you heal a broken bone.

This is why the OUR KINGS mantra and affirmation are so powerful. To see these young men speak life into themself and their brothers, is something magical.

You see their chest get bigger, they get a little taller and start to stand with pride.

This is what building Confidence looks like, self awareness and self worth! Our KINGS deserve to know we believe they are more than what our society tells them they are, and we will continue to pour greatness into them. 🖤💛

🖤THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SMILE.
What does it take to protect a Black boy’s joy?

🖤A SMILE IS ONLY PART OF THE STORY.
A boy can laugh with his friends and still carry worries he hasn’t found the words to share. Knowing him means caring about what he feels beyond what we see.

🖤BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, HE IS A CHILD.
Before the expectations placed on him. Before assumptions about his size, his voice, or his behavior. He deserves patience and the freedom to grow at his own pace.

🖤"YOU’RE STRONG” CAN’T BE ALL WE TELL HIM.
He needs to hear, “I’m here.” “That hurt, didn’t it?” “You don’t have to figure this out alone.” Our boys deserve support even when they seem okay.

🖤JOY NEEDS ROOM TO BREATHE.
Room to be silly without being corrected. To try something without being good at it. To enjoy a moment without having to earn it. Childhood should hold plenty of those moments.

🖤BELONGING CAN CHANGE HOW A BOY SEES HIMSELF.
When his brothers welcome him and adults value his voice, he begins to understand: I matter here. I have something to offer. I can show up as myself.

🖤AT OUR KINGS, CONNECTION COMES FIRST.
Through our CPR Circles, shared meals, and time together, we make space for real conversations. We get to know the boy behind the smile and build trust over time.

🖤WE HELP HIM SEE WHO HE CAN BECOME.
Cultural education connects him to his history. Mentorship introduces him to men who share their journeys. New experiences give him opportunities to discover his interests and imagine his future.

🖤KEEPING THAT SMILE TAKES A VILLAGE.
We partner with parents and guardians because caring for a boy means supporting the people raising him, too. Together, we help surround him with consistent care from boyhood to manhood.

🖤WE WANT THE JOY TO REACH AS DEEP AS THE SMILE.
And when smiling doesn’t come easily, he still belongs. He is still worthy of care. Our commitment to him remains.

There’s something special about seeing people come together to uplift, inspire, and celebrate Black boys!

This weekend, we hosted our annual Back-to-School S’mores Night—a night centered on building family connections, supporting our boys in school, and having honest conversations about the important role parents play in their sons’ education.

As OUR KINGS has grown, so has this event. This year, we welcomed and supported 65 boys ages 3–18. We watched them laugh, play together, connect through side conversations, break bread together and build brotherhood in the most natural and beautiful ways.

Our KINGS also received swag bags filled with all the essentials needed to start this years cohort. & of course, the highlight for our families and young KINGS was receiving their KING IN THE MAKING shirts. Their excitement said it all!

This evening was about more than s’mores. It was about creating space for our boys to feel seen, encouraging parents to stay engaged in their education, and reminding our KINGS and families that they have a village standing behind them.

A special thank you to the County of San Diego , Harvey Family and Carrolls Learning Angels for helping us make this event possible and for continuing to invest in OUR KINGS and their families.

It truly takes a village—and we are grateful for ours. 💛

📚 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY — TUTORS NEEDED!

We’re looking for volunteers to join us for after-school tutoring in Southeast San Diego at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA.

Our goal is simple: support students as they work toward their academic goals, build confidence, and get the extra help they need along the way.

You do not have to be a teacher to volunteer! We’re looking for patient, dependable people who enjoy working with youth and are willing to share their time and knowledge.

Tutors can support students with:
• Homework
• Reading & writing
• Math
• Study skills
• Test preparation
• Encouragement & accountability

This opportunity is open to the community and will support students beyond OUR KINGS.

A HUGE thank you to the Harvey Foundation for sponsoring this year’s cohort shirts for over 50 young KINGS! 💛🖤

When Armon and I met some time ago,he fell in love with the mission right away and knew he wanted to support somehow. So when the opportunity arises, he reached out and simply said, “We got you,” this meant the world to us because this a foundation making a difference in our own community.

These yellow "KING IN THE MAKING" shirts have become our signature. When you see a young KING wearing one you know he belongs to a brotherhood. & walks the walk. The boys wear them with pride.

Thank you, Harvey Foundation, for showing up for our KINGS!
