The Butte County Agricultural Commissioner is advising residents to take immediate precautions after the invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter was detected on plant shipments delivered to Costco stores in California.

Residents who have purchased grapevines or citrus plants from any Costco store since April 21, 2026, are asked to follow these important instructions to help prevent the spread of the pest:

For grapevines: Place two garbage bags over the plants, secure them tightly, and contact the Butte County Agriculture Department to arrange pick up.

For citrus plants: Contact the Butte County Agriculture Department to schedule an inspection.

Do not attempt to return, transport, or relocate plants.

Do not place plants in the trash or compost bin.

Butte County Farm Bureau members Jim and Laurie Noble of Noble Orchards know all about the realities of fire season. Experts have cautioned that California could experience elevated wildfire risks this year.
The warnings come after an unusually warm and dry start of spring throughout California, driven by a stubborn high-pressure ridge off the coast, which is likely to remain the dominant weather feature through at least June, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Record heat in many areas in mid-March melted most of the snowpack and led to increased dead fuel flammability as the month progressed, the center observed.
