Today, on Ageism Awareness Day (October 9th), we are sharing "That's Not Me!" - a cartoon series made possible by Taproot Foundation and illustrated by Kyle Miller.

Sometimes people make assumptions about us because of our age.

You know that moment. The salesclerk steers you toward the sensible shoes. The doctor talks to your adult child instead of you. A younger colleague explains something that you invented.

That's ageism: making assumptions based on age. Not only is it wrong, it means people are treating you as a category instead of an individual. That can be annoying, insulting, and even dangerous in a medical setting.

Older Adult Appreciation Day is inside the gymnasium at Sheil Park- Please bring your friends, family, neighbors and most importantly-yourself, to this event. There will be refreshments and food, crafts for all ages, a balloon artist (also for all ages!), face painting, and lots of fun! Introduce the Village to your friends, neighbors and family! Let's celebrate all of the older adults in our lives!

This event is hosted by The Village Chicago and presented with support from SSA 27.

On Tuesday, a sold out crowd of 160 guests came together at Cafe Brauer for our Annual Benefit, Then & Now: A Retro Celebration. We heard “What a night,” “I loved the dancers,” and, more than once, “What a lovely event.” The room felt like the Village at its best: old friends catching up, new connections being made, great conversation, and fun along the way.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, donated, bid, volunteered, sponsored, and helped bring the evening to life. You are what makes the Village a community, and what keeps it growing, changing, and looking forward.

THEN gave us plenty to celebrate, NOW is full of possibility, and we’re building what comes NEXT. We’re so glad you’re part of it.
