High-quality early childhood education is more than investment in children, It's an investment in families and communities. Contessa Houston, MBA, Board Member and Chair of the Center’s Parent Policy Council, brings an important perspective to this conversation with her op-ed in Crain's Chicago Business. Contessa shines a light on the lasting impact of Head Start and the importance of protecting the quality, safety, and parent engagement that have made the program a vital resource for generations of families.

This week, our classrooms turned into spaces for creativity and reflection. 🎨💛

As part of Legacy Week, our children and youth honored the story of Carole Robertson and the three other girls who lost their lives in the 16th street Baptist Church Bombing.

Through art, they painted hearts filled with messages of peace and love, wrote haikus that put big feelings into words, and created self-portraits that celebrate exactly who they are.

Moments like these teach empathy, unity, and the courage to use your voice, the same values that have guided our mission for 50 years.

Every September, we pause. We remember four girls whose names live on in who we are. This week isn't about sorrow. It's about love, looking back so we can move forward, together.

On September 15, 1963, the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama took Carole's life. Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, and Denise McNair were taken too.

Carole Robertson was fourteen. She was getting ready for a Sunday that should have been ordinary — a day for young people like her to shine.

This is Legacy Week in motion. This week, in our classrooms, our youth will read, reflect, and create. They'll explore Sankofa, a West African concept about looking to the past, through books and honest conversations. Every question gets met with care.

We look back to move forward. The lessons from the past inform how we engage with our children and youth, and how we create spaces where they are safe, seen and valued.

Yesterday was truly groundbreaking! 👷

Partners, supporters, friends and staff gathered at our North Lawndale Flagship site to celebrate the start of renovations that will transform the spaces where children, youth, and families learn, play, grow, and thrive.

We believe the environment IS the third teacher. These renovations will create spaces that inspire curiosity, support learning, and send a powerful message to everyone who walks through our doors: you matter, you belong here, and you are worth investing in.

In communities where high-quality spaces are too often limited or overlooked, we have a responsibility to do more.
