I'm grateful to see 25News highlighting House Bill 4659, legislation I introduced that was signed into law earlier this year. This important measure gives survivors of domestic violence a legal defense against certain debts incurred through threats, intimidation, fraud, or coercion, helping protect those who have already endured so much.

No survivor should have to carry the financial burden of an abuser's actions. For too many, debt accumulated through abuse becomes another barrier to rebuilding their lives and finding independence.

I'm proud to have led this effort and worked alongside colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get it across the finish line. Survivors deserve the opportunity to move forward without being held financially responsible for the abusive actions of others.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the 9th District wants the neighborhood to know help is close by — and easy to reach.
This Friday, October 9, from 9 AM to 12 PM, officers will be at McDonald’s, 3867 S Archer Ave, with domestic violence resources and other materials. Come grab a coffee. Sit for a minute. Ask whatever’s on your mind, or just tell us what’s happening on your block. Brought to you by Chicago Police Department 9th District Community Policing and McDonald’s.

Our 2026 Domestic Violence Awareness pullovers and T-shirts came out beautiful! 💜

A heartfelt thank-you to our generous donor for making these for our community. We’re proud to wear them as we raise awareness and show support for survivors across the city of Chicago.

Together, we can keep spreading the message: love should never hurt.

Yesterday, we were proud to partner with the 018th District Community Policing Team to raise awareness about domestic violence and share resources available to victim-survivors throughout Chicago and Cook County.

We were moved by the brave survivors who shared their stories. Their voices remind us why awareness, support, and access to resources matter. This event was made possible by the 18th District Domestic Violence Committee and its community partners. We were grateful and excited to be part of this collaboration.

A special thank-you to Carmen Gerconne for speaking to the service providers and attendees about the importance of supporting domestic violence victim-survivors. Thank you to Officer Garcia of the 018th District for doing such a great job assembling this event. We also appreciate Ms. Robinson for coming out to support us. Your support for victims and domestic violence advocacy is important and deeply appreciated.

The Chicago Police Department’s Office of Victim Services has a civilian domestic violence advocate in every district, as well as advocates trained in criminal sexual assault response.

Helen & Joe Community Organization is also here to support victim-survivors every day. We assist with Cook County emergency orders of protection, off-site safe housing, and emergency crisis counseling referrals. 312-972-9193
