What happened to the Turkistan Islamic Party?

Several factions of foreign fighters are credited with helping topple Syria's Bashar al-Assad nearly two years ago - among them, the Uyghurs from East Turkistan. They eventually became amongst the largest contingents of foreign fighters in Syria, though those who have stayed and built lives there are notoriously secretive. However, France 24's Wassim Nasr was recently in Syria and had exclusive access to Uyghur fighters there.

On October 1, 2026, marking 77 years since Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing, Justice For All’s Save Uyghur Campaign commemorates the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) illegal military occupation and colonization of East Turkistan that occurred later that month.

“For 77 years, the Chinese Communist Party has attempted to erase the sovereignty, culture and identity of East Turkistan through military occupation, state-directed colonization and mass atrocity,” stated Arslan Hidayat, Save Uyghur Team Lead at Justice For All. “Today, as Beijing celebrates its national day, millions of Uyghurs, Kazakhs and Kyrgyz remain interned in concentration camps, subjected to forced sterilizations, forced labor and systematic destruction. Silence and diplomatic hesitation only embolden Beijing’s ambition to turn East Turkistan into an eternal colony…”

Justice For All’s Save Uyghur Campaign strongly condemns the state-aligned cyber and intelligence operations detailed in a comprehensive threat intelligence report published by AI safety company Anthropic. The report reveals how China-based and Chinese state-aligned actors have integrated artificial intelligence tools to automate mass surveillance, targeting and transnational repression against Uyghur civilians, journalists and diaspora organizations globally.
