Press Statement by Global Preeclampsia Advocates - World Preeclampsia Day 2026

As Advocates united in the belief that the advocacy, accountability, and political landscape for preeclampsia must change, we call for May 22, World Preeclampsia Day, to be formally recognized and endorsed by the United Nations within the global observance calendar.

Such recognition would elevate global visibility, strengthen political commitment, and remind governments, development partners, humanitarian actors, and health systems worldwide of their shared responsibility to urgently address the growing burden of preeclampsia, including within fragile and humanitarian settings where maternal mortality risks are often highest.

As the United Nations Secretary-General has emphasized, "Safe motherhood is aright, not a privilege." The time has come to move beyond commitments and translate words into concrete action. With only a few years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, many low- and middle-income countries remain significantly off track in meeting SDG 3 targets related to maternal mortality reduction. Without urgent acceleration in investments, accountability, and political prioritization, preventable maternal and newborn deaths from preeclampsia will continue to rise.

We therefore call on:

• Governments to prioritize maternal health financing and equitable access to quality obstetric care.
• International organizations and development partners to strengthen coordinated global action on preeclampsia.
• Civil society and media to amplify survivor voices and sustain advocacy efforts.
• Researchers and innovators to expand investments in affordable diagnostics, treatment, and prevention strategies.
• Communities and families to support early antenatal care attendance and maternal health
awareness.

No woman should die while giving life. Every newborn deserves a chance at life.
The time for urgency, accountability, and collective action is now!

A Moment for Mom

Let’s take a moment and talk about your health, Mom! We know how easy it is to forget our checkups after the initial postpartum period, so if you have not seen your primary care provider recently, now is a good time to make an appointment.

*General Health
-Talk about your overall health–are you feeling extra tired or do you have any concerning symptoms?
-Review family and personal histories, lifestyle issues such as sleep, diet, and exercise.
-Review medications and get refills if needed.
-Do you need any bloodwork or tests?
-Do you need referrals to any specialists?
-Have you seen a dentist and optometrist recently?
-Are you up to date on vaccinations? Is it time for boosters or new vaccinations recommended for older adults?

*Cardiovascular Health (Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy put us at higher risk for cardiovascular disease.)
-How is your blood pressure? US guidelines currently recommend that people who are at higher risk for CVD aim for BP under 120/80. Other countries may have different guidelines for target BP, so please discuss optimal BP with your provider.
-When was the last time you had bloodwork such as CBC, CMP, cholesterol, thyroid, glucose, triglycerides?
-Have you had a baseline EKG or echocardiogram?
-Should you see a cardiologist?

*Well Woman Care (Some PCPs will do this, but you may need to request extra time when you schedule the appointment, or you may need to see a gynecologist.)
-Is your family planning method still a good fit?
-If you are considering another pregnancy in the near future, should you see an OB or MFM first? Do you need to change any medications or have any tests before another pregnancy?
-Especially for those over 35, do you have any questions or concerns about changes to your cycles, sexual health, or other perimenopause symptoms?
-Could you use a referral to a pelvic floor therapist?
-When was your last Pap test?
-Have you had a breast exam recently, and/or is it time for a baseline mammogram?

*Mental Health
-Do you have any concerns about your overall mental or emotional health?
-Are you showing signs of PTSD, anxiety, and/or depression?
-Especially for those closer to menopause, are you seeing any mental or emotional changes that might need some help?
-Would a referral to a mental health professional be helpful?

*🌸Honoring Mothers, Advancing Justice, Ending Preeclampsia 💖*

On this International Mother’s Day and in commemoration of May as Preeclampsia Awareness month, we honor the strength, resilience, and voices of mothers and families affected by preeclampsia and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) globally.

Following the just-ended Global Preeclampsia Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda from 5th–8th May 2026, convened by the World Health Organization of Global Stakeholders we, the Global Preeclampsia Advocates ( ) , reaffirm our unwavering commitment to advancing maternal health equity and justice worldwide.

As advocates, we remain committed to centering and elevating women’s voices, protecting women’s health rights, and driving greater investment in Preeclampsia research, prevention, quality of care, and healthcare justice.

_" No mother should lose her life, health, or dignity because of preventable pregnancy complications. "_

This Mother’s Day, we call on governments, health systems, researchers, funders, and communities to stand with women everywhere and _accelerate action for safer pregnancies and healthier futures._

Mifepristone is essential. We must continue to protect access to evidence-based reproductive health care grounded in science, not ideology.

You can be a force for health in your community—no action is too small. When you speak up, you make a difference.

Wondering what you can do? Start by knowing the facts: Mifepristone is safe, effective, and essential. Then engage within your community—online or in person!—and share why access to reproductive health care and mifepristone matters to you.
