Happy Hispanic Heritage Month from the SLM Community!

We enjoyed a celebration filled with games, incredible food, and learning more from our fellow community members about their culture. Thank you to all who put this event on and for sharing more about who you are!

One week away!

We are honored to present Marshawn Feltus with the Distinguished Alumni Award at the Heart of Saint Leonard's on October 15th.

Feltus enrolled in our Culinary Skills Training Program, which led him on a journey to run a catering business and hone his kitchen skills in Jamaica and Spain. And when we call, he always answers to serve as a guest speaker to share his story and inspire others.

Most recently, Feltus has joined our Board of Directors, and he believes re-entry work is the way to pave the path forward for people “who have lost their way for whatever reason.”

SLM is proud to have provided holistic reentry services to nearly 500 system-impacted individuals in Fiscal Year 2026 - our biggest year yet!

Thank you to anyone who has trusted SLM for workforce, education and housing services, referred their family and friends to the agency, and our supporters who ensure this work is possible.

We are honored to present Walter Burnett, Jr with the Champions Award at the Heart of Saint Leonard's on October 15th.

When Walter Burnett Jr. was elected alderman in 1995, it marked a day that somebody who truly embraced the re-entry community joined the ranks of the City Council.

The former neighborhood alderman and Vice Mayor of the City of Chicago has burnished a legacy of real leadership. He advanced affordable and mixed-income housing in both policy and planning.

Thank you, Walter Burnett, for being our elected champion. We appreciate your investment in the West Side. And we look forward to honor your vision and mission accomplished.

Alumni Spotlight!

Jeffery visited the Barlow Center on behalf of his employer to help interview graduates of the Construction Skills program to work alongside him at Big Shoulders Restoration. He gave the candidates some words of advice sharing the importance of working hard and showing your dedication to the job.

Jeffery’s boss shared that, “He is our go-to restoration guy. If we have a big job, we call Jeff and we know he’ll be there.”

His long-time friend and former instructor Jonathan Wilson shared, “Seeing how well he’s doing since graduation, how well he’s doing in the field, yeah I’m proud.”
