Today we honor and remember the brave individuals who gave their lives in service to our country—and we recognize the women who have served with courage, strength, and dedication.

Last October, Zonta Cheektowaga-Lancaster was proud to help sponsor an Honor Flight that sent a plane full of women veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

It was a powerful reminder: women have always been part of this story. They have served, led, supported, and sacrificed—often without recognition.

Today, we remember the fallen.
We honor those who served.
And we recognize the women whose contributions continue to shape our nation.

💛 Their service—and their stories—matter.

🌟 Historical Spotlight: Clara Barton

Clara Barton turned compassion into action—and changed the way the world responds to crisis.

As the founder of the American Red Cross, she brought aid, medical care, and relief to those impacted by war and disaster, often placing herself directly in harm’s way to help others.

At a time when leadership roles for women were limited, Clara Barton proved that women could lead in moments of urgency, strength, and courage.

✨ “I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it.”

Her legacy reminds us that showing up for others—especially in their most vulnerable moments—is one of the most powerful forms of leadership.

🌟 Historical Spotlight: MacKenzie Scott

MacKenzie Scott is one of the largest philanthropists in the world—and a powerful example of what women can do when they lead with intention.

She has donated billions of dollars to organizations advancing education, economic mobility, and women’s empowerment—often through unrestricted, trust-based gifts that put resources directly into the hands of those doing the work.

In a space historically dominated by men, her approach is reshaping philanthropy: fewer barriers, more trust, and faster, deeper impact.

✨ “There are lots of resources each of us can pull from our safes to share with others.”

Her work is a reminder that when women lead, they don’t just give—they expand opportunity and accelerate change.

💛 Last Thursday, the Zonta Club of Cheektowaga-Lancaster gathered for a very special Awards Meeting celebrating leadership, service, and community impact.

We were proud to award scholarships to three outstanding young women whose dedication to education, service, and future goals truly reflect the spirit of Zonta:

✨ Carrie Kornacki – Lancaster High School
✨ Samantha Evenhouse – Lancaster High School
✨ Alivia Miller – St. Mary’s High School

These students represent the next generation of strong, compassionate leaders, and we are excited to see all they accomplish.

We were also honored to support the Family Justice Center through their “Totes of Love” initiative, which provides comfort and essential items to individuals navigating difficult circumstances. We are grateful for the work they do in our community and were delighted to contribute to their mission.

💜 Our club is also looking forward to touring the Family Justice Center and volunteering together on a future hands-on service project very soon.

Congratulations again to our scholarship recipients, and thank you to everyone helping create a stronger, safer, and more supportive community for women and girls.

🌿 Historical Spotlight: Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai believed that caring for the earth and empowering women go hand in hand.

As the founder of the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, she mobilized thousands of women to plant millions of trees—restoring their primary sources of fuel and income while strengthening their independence and communities.

Her work was about more than the environment. It was about dignity, opportunity, and justice.

In 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to sustainable development, democracy, and peace.

✨ “It’s the little things citizens do. That’s what will make the difference.”

Her legacy reminds us that when women are empowered to care for their environment, they can transform entire communities.

Sometimes, the smallest actions create the greatest impact.

Members of our club recently partnered with the Family Justice Center to obtain domestic violence awareness and resource posters, placing them in the restrooms of local high schools throughout our community.

Why restrooms? Because they offer a private, safe space—a place where students can pause, read, and reflect without pressure.

Teens are uniquely positioned. They may not always be the ones experiencing violence, but they often see the signs—in friends, in relationships, in subtle changes that signal something isn’t right. Giving them access to clear information and resources empowers them to recognize those signs and know where to turn for help.

This is how change begins: quietly, intentionally, and where it’s needed most.
