The culmination of the Office for Sustainability’s 2026 Staff Sustainability Leadership Development Program took place in the UVA Rotunda Dome room on August 17. The 20 participants attended monthly sessions through the year about UVA’s sustainability goals, specifically learning about waste reduction efforts so that they could implement a project of their own, within their departments and sphere of influence.

A few examples of the impactful work: DeVon Wade, College and Career Access Program Manager for the The Center for Community Partnerships at UVA Starr Hill Pathways program created a 10% green team, a group of their summer camp participants who pledged to reduce 10% of the camper's waste through teamwork and peer-to-peer education. Taylor Goff, Morven Sustainability Lab’s Operations and Outreach Manager, improved waste management and food recovery at Morven Sustainability Lab, which hosts 200+ events annually, redesigning waste bins to make composting and recycling more intuitive for guests. And Jennie Taylor, Virginia Humanities Operations Manager, created an Off Grounds Resource Directory to help off Grounds staff members easily locate recycling vendors and other sustainability-related services.

We look forward to running the program once again next year! https://sustainability.virginia.edu/uva-staff-sustainability-leadership-program

Did you know that a plastic container recycled at UVA could be transformed into carpeting paint containers or plastic resin pellets to create other products like plant pots, toolboxes, auto parts and more? ♻️ Here’s how #1, #2, and #5 plastic recycling works on Grounds because what you throw away doesn’t just end up in a landfill. It gets repurposed! UVA Recycling
