Research on meaningful coincidences suggests that synchronicity and serendipity are quite common. The valid and reliable Weird Coincidence Survey [take WC Survey now] demonstrates their commonality in general populations, as does the Cambridge University Uncertainty website. Their use in psychology is addressed in this post.

Regarding explanations, Stanford statistician Persi Diaconis (1989) declared that “In large populations any strange thing can happen.” British statistician David Hand (2014) concurred and offered principles by which human beings create meaningful coincidences. Writing for Psychology Today magazine, Psychiatrist Ralph Lewis concurs that randomness is the best explanation for these strange events.

Other proposed explanations include divine intervention, chaos and complexity theory, quantum mechanics, fractals, personal agency, and the psychosphere among many others. Whatever the explanation, most theoreticians including those who support the randomness explanation agree that coincidences can be useful.. This post outlines some of the many uses of meaningful coincidences within psychology.

Many people initially wonder whether they are going mad when they first experience a huge increase in amazing coincidences. This is certainly one of the main themes in messages of people who have contacted me as a psychologist who has written about synchronicity. Some also described how their friends or family believed they were psychotic at such times, despite them feeling quite sane.

It’s certainly understandable if someone feels overwhelmed if they suddenly start to experience a huge increase of weird coincidences. This is also the case if they have other transpersonal or mystical experiences such as hearing the voice of a deceased relative or suddenly developing psychic or other paranormal abilities such as clairvoyant visions. This is sometimes referred to as a spiritual emergency. It can be hard to make to make any sense of such experiences, especially if you haven’t ever discussed such experiences with others and don’t have any mental framework for thinking about them.

This raises the question of how you can tell the difference between non-ordinary states of consciousness, which might be referred to as transpersonal or mystical or psycho-spiritual phenomena, and psychosis. It can even be difficult for mental health professionals to tell the difference. Some people might even be experiencing a combination of both.

For synchronicity to aid the therapeutic process, therapists need to be able to recognize an occurring meaningful coincidence, as it unfolds. Potential explanations for how these events occur include assigning them to acts of God or “the Universe,” random phenomena caused by probability or chance, generated events influenced or created by the unconscious of the experiencer, quantum physical concepts such as “entanglement” describing connections between separated particles that persist regardless of distance, parapsychological phenomena including telepathy and precognition, or other forms of mystery that point to the unknown. The impacts of synchronicity in the therapeutic setting emerge as psychotherapists integrate these experiences and make use of them in ways that are beneficial to the patient. The implications of this phenomena are that we may live in a highly meaningful and interconnected reality, brought together in complex ways that we are only now beginning to understand.
