What is a Certified Child Life Specialist?

When a parent or caregiver is diagnosed with cancer, children often have questions, worries, and emotions they don't know how to express.

A Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) is a trained professional who helps children and families navigate serious illness through education, emotional support, and developmentally appropriate coping strategies.

At UPLIFT, our Child Life Specialists help children:
✨ Understand a cancer diagnosis in an age-appropriate way
✨ Express their thoughts and feelings in a safe environment
✨ Develop healthy coping skills
✨ Feel supported during times of uncertainty and change

Every child deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported. That's why individualized Child Life services are at the heart of what we do.

We're excited to partner with LOWVELO this year in support of the fight against cancer.

LOWVELO brings our community together to raise critical funds for lifesaving cancer research at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, with 100% of participant-raised funds supporting innovative research that impacts patients and families across South Carolina.

After riders cross the finish line, we'll continue the celebration at Shuck Fest, one of this year's official LOWVELO activation events. It's an opportunity to come together, celebrate an incredible accomplishment, and continue supporting those impacted by cancer.

Whether you're riding, volunteering, cheering from the sidelines, or joining us at Shuck Fest, every effort makes a difference. We can't wait to celebrate with the LOWVELO community this November! 💙🚴🦪

We were honored to attend this year’s Project IMPACT Community Engagement Symposium, joining nonprofit leaders, healthcare professionals, and community partners committed to creating lasting change across the Lowcountry.

Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to connect with organizations working to expand access to care, strengthen community partnerships, and improve the well-being of the individuals and families we serve. It was inspiring to learn from one another and explore new ways we can work together to make an even greater impact.

Thank you to MUSC Health for bringing together so many passionate organizations and for investing in conversations that lead to meaningful collaboration. 🌟

A special thank you to the The Town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina for selecting The Lonon Foundation as one of this year's beneficiaries of the Blessing of the Fleet festival. 🦐🦐🦐

We're incredibly grateful for the generosity of everyone who supports this cherished community tradition. Because of the participation of our amazing volunteers and festival supporters, a donation of $12,000 was made to The Lonon Foundation, helping us continue providing hope, connection, and support to children and families navigating a parent or caregiver's cancer diagnosis.

Thank you to the Mount Pleasant community for making a lasting impact on the families we serve. 💛

Last night was pretty damn special. 💙

Our family got to spend the evening with The Lonon Foundation, and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever take nights like this for granted.

Cancer has given our family a lot of things we never asked for — hospitals, surgeries, treatments, uncertainty, and way too many nights apart.

But last night was just… us 🥰

All five of us together. Baseball. Laughing. Being outside. Making memories that had absolutely nothing to do with cancer.

That’s what organizations like The Lonon Foundation make possible, and I’m so grateful we got to experience it together.

Just a really good night with my favorite people. ⚾️💙🤍

Now, she's bringing that expertise to UPLIFT, where she'll provide individualized support to children and families navigating a parent or caregiver's cancer diagnosis.

Please join us in giving Katie a warm welcome to The Lonon Foundation family! We're so grateful to have her on our team and can't wait for the impact she'll make.

We're excited to introduce something new this fall! ✏️

The Lonon Foundation is launching a Teen Volunteer Program at Academic Magnet School, right here in Charleston, giving students the opportunity to support younger children through service, mentorship, and leadership.

This program is especially meaningful because it's being led by three of our own UPLIFT alum, Peyton, Dylan, and Jack, who are helping bring this vision to life.

We'll welcome just 10–15 volunteers each year, creating a small, dedicated group committed to making a difference.

If you're an Academic Magnet student and your passionate about giving back, stay tuned. Applications open this fall! 📝
