AFSCME Local 1110 President Chuck Carver has been named WJBC's 2026 Laborer of the Year!

Chuck led Local 1110 through a historic 28-day strike against Illinois State University—and they came out of the strike stronger than ever. Chuck worked to build solidarity among Local 1110’s members. He helped rally the student body and Bloomington community. Above all, he and Local 1110 proved what working people can accomplish when we stand together.

This Monday, Chuck will have a much-deserved spot at the head of the Bloomington Labor Day parade. Congratulations Chuck!

Many people mistakenly believe Dolly Parton's song '9 to 5' anthem was titled after the standard workday, but the song and film were actually inspired by the 9to5 social movement which emerged in Boston in the early 1970s.

The 9to5 organization was led by women workers who advocated for pay equality and rights in the workplace. It is one of the foundational protest movements of modern feminism and one of the most significant organic worker uprisings in American history.

When people retell Dolly's legacy, be sure to include her undying solidarity with working people who take a stand in the struggle for equality.

Congratulations to AFSCME's new President Patrick Moran and Secretary-Treasurer Nicole Pollard!

Moran has fought for working people for more than 30 years, working first as an AFSCME organizer before being elected president of AFSCME Council 3 in Maryland in 2012. Pollard is currently executive assistant to President Lee Saunders, a role in which she helps councils and locals grow their power.

At this pivotal moment for our union, Moran and Pollard are ready to fight forward and lead our union into its next chapter.
