Today we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and the contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history.

Here in Centralia, this day carries special meaning as we remember our founder, George Washington. Born into slavery in Virginia, George Washington journeyed west and built a life rooted in perseverance, vision, and community. His legacy lives on in the city he founded and in the values of opportunity, belonging, and hope that continue to shape Centralia today.

As we gather, celebrate, and enjoy our community, we also take time to reflect on the significance of freedom and the stories that have helped define our nation and our hometown.

Today, we honor the past, celebrate progress, and look toward a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Happy Juneteenth, Centralia. ❤️💛💚

After years of serving our community, Geary is beginning a well-earned transition toward retirement, marking the close of an important chapter in downtown Centralia.

Small business ownership is rarely just a job. It's years of early mornings, long days, problem solving, relationship building, and showing up for a community time and time again. That kind of commitment leaves a lasting impact, whether it's measured in customers served, conversations shared, or simply being a familiar and dependable part of downtown life.

As Geary steps back from the day-to-day responsibilities of ownership, we want to express our gratitude for the investment, dedication, and perseverance it takes to build and sustain a local business over many years.

While the business will continue under new ownership, today we especially want to recognize and thank Geary for everything he has contributed to our downtown and community. We wish him nothing but the best as he begins this next chapter and hope retirement brings plenty of time to enjoy the things that matter most.

Thank you, Geary, for being part of the story of downtown Centralia.

For three decades, Geary Lockard has owned and operated Tilikum Books & Bindery, first in Olympia and for more than two dozen years on Tower Avenue in Centralia, but June 30 marks the end of an …
