Supporting veteran mental health starts with awareness and action. We're hosting our next virtual session, Thursday, September 3rd.

The American Legion's training in partnership with Columbia University provides practical guidance on recognizing warning signs, starting meaningful conversations, and connecting veterans to the support they need.

This session is designed for leaders, community members, and advocates who want to make a real impact.

SUPPORT SOUGHT FOR INJURED PARAMEDIC, WIFE: Brandon Alderman, a military veteran, was involved in a motorcycle crash on Aug. 24, breaking two of his lower vertebrae, his tailbone and possibly causing nerve damage, according to an online crowdfunding campaign aimed at raising money for his family.

While Brandon Alderman, who has served as a paramedic in Thurston County for 13 years, remains in the Puyallup Good Samaritan Hospital, his wife, Becca, was set to undergo heart surgery on Aug. 28. She is a licensed social worker who saw patients in the emergency room at Providence St. Peter Hospital for six years before transitioning to work for the Washington state Healthcare Authority as an administrator, according to the campaign.

Recently, Becca made the difficult decision to leave her role in state government due to a diagnosis of a dangerous genetic connective tissue disorder known as Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, which weakens the heart and blood vessels. The condition is known to cause ruptures and aneurysms, and Becca decided it was best to focus fully on pursuing treatments and procedures for her condition while being able to spend more restorative time with her family, the fundraising campaign states.

Brandon originally planned to continue his work as a paramedic to support his family while his wife had time to heal and recover. Brandon will not be able to work for at least two to four months and will need to undergo physical and occupational therapy before his return to service as a paramedic can be considered.

Becca’s last day on the payroll is Aug. 31, according to the campaign, which means until Brandon is well enough to work again, the couple will have no income to support themselves and their 3-year-old son.

To support the family in their current time of need, the GoFundMe campaign was started by Becca’s colleague Zach Lynch.

“It would absolutely be incredible for our local communities to show up for both Becca and Brandon as they have for us, having overcome so much together, with so much more on the horizon,” Lynch wrote on the GoFundMe. “They have for so long given so much to so many and have been dealt a devastatingly difficult hand in the past handful of weeks. Hopefully this page can help to ease some of the mounting and compounding financial burdens so they can focus as much as possible on recovery and family.

Donated funds would be used to cover medical expenses, childcare, food, basic needs, any potential lost income and other unforeseen expenses in the days ahead, the GoFundMe stated.
