We were able to go up to the clinic today (Tuesday) without any major problems except the usual slipping and sliding! The rivers are still high but the flooded areas are improving. Lots of little homes along the river have been destroyed with people in need of prayer. Thanks for helping in that regard!

Greetings from flooded Jérémie, Haiti! We’ve had 5 days of rain, heavier since yesterday, with severe flooding in the whole area around Jérémie. The road we travel on to get out of town was flooded today and the bridge over the river that we cross every morning and evening nearly overflowed! Needless to say, we cancelled our clinic today and will wait for the rains to stop before we venture up the mountain again. Enjoy these photos taken by other adventurous people!

Recognizing Potential
Every once in a while, we are able to help a student we feel has potential to return to help us. Such was the case with the two young men we put through medical school, Guy-Johns Chevalier and Jameson Delice. Guy-Johns grew up in Gatineau, just down the road from the clinic and worked in our pharmacy for several years after he finished high school. We saw his potential for learning and were thrilled to be able to support him in his desire to pursue a career in medicine.

You give the GIFTS, we get the SMILES!
For many years, Cherlie and I and our staff in Haiti had the luxury of welcoming individuals and groups coming down as visitors to work with our ministry. In the early years, many of the teams were construction-oriented, helping us build and furnish the clinic, lab/xray/pharmacy building and upstairs residence. Then, we had medical groups with physicians, nurses, ultrasound technicians, bio-medical engineers, each one contributing to our patient care services in an important way. As is often the case with visitors, those of you who came to visit us brought gifts for our patients – tennis shoes, t-shirts, little girls’ dresses, diapers, beanie babies and toy cars. And, when you gave them to our patients, they rewarded your generosity and compassion with their laughter and their smiles.

If you’ve been following our posts and newsletters, you probably know that we’ve been doing some construction on our clinic site in Gatineau, building front walls and gates to control access to the clinic grounds. I am pleased to say that construction of the boundary walls and guard house is nearly finished and the iron workers are in the process of making the large entry gates. They’re also making iron doors and windows for the second floor of the spiritual and community center and doors and windows for the guard house. The masons have finished their work on the spiritual center, including construction of a cistern for water storage and a double-hole outdoor latrine for use by those who are attending events at the spiritual and community center. Enjoy these photos of the nearly-completed construction!

Lifene Charles sat in the chair in my examination room in our clinic in Gatineau, clutching some money in his hand as he talked. He had a history of hypertension and congestive heart failure and the medications we had given him on his previous visit one month ago had really helped him. They had just finished and he was afraid to go very long without medications. The last time he had done that, he got very short of breath and his legs became swollen. Now that he was better, he didn’t want to get worse again.
He looked at me intently as he talked about the money in his hand. He had some land on which he had given a young man permission to plant corn. As is usually the custom here in Haiti, the owner of the land is entitled to 25% of the harvest. Knowing that he needed money for his appointment, he had gone to the young man to collect his portion of the corn harvest. But, all he was given was one can of corn, a small fraction of the harvest and the sale of which wouldn’t give him nearly enough to buy his meds. I could see the disappointment in his eyes and felt his dejection. It was obvious that the young farmer didn’t care much about the elderly man who owned the land he had planted on. One little can of corn was like a slap in the face. But, Lifene was determined to keep this appointment, so he borrowed a few dollars from a friend, enough to pay for his consultation and some of his meds. We used money from our Indigent Patient Fund to make sure he left the clinic with a two-month supply. Please pray for Lifene. He has very serious heart disease and is struggling just to survive. Thanks to our donors and supporters, we’re able to help him on his journey to improved health!

Last week we took a big step forward in our plans for adding physicians to our clinic staff at Centre de Sante de Gatineau. Guy-Johns Chevalier, one of the young men we put through medical school, graduated in July and is waiting to begin his year of service to the government. He grew up in a home just down the road from the clinic and worked for several years with us in the pharmacy. He’s going to work with us twice a week for the next month or two until his Social Service year begins. This will give me a chance to get him oriented to our electronic medical record system and allow me to mentor him so that he can eventually see patients independently. The other student we supported in school, Jameson Delice, also recently graduated and we’re hoping he’ll soon begin working with us as well. We’re grateful for your prayers as we make these advances in our ministry.
