Special thanks to Bureau of Forestry staff and volunteers who planted over 300 trees and shrubs in Michaux State Forest as part of a habitat restoration project aimed at creating early successional habitat for species such as the ruffed grouse.

Previous treatments in this area included forest mowing in the summer of 2024, followed by a prescribed burn last fall. After mowing reduced competing, less diverse vegetation and opened up the canopy to sunlight, fire removed duff buildup and returned nutrients to the soil; all of which aids in the natural regeneration of the forest. These plantings will add some diversity to the flush of growth already taking place.
