Step into the smoke and thunder of the American Revolution and meet a woman who refused to stand on the sidelines. She carried water across a blazing battlefield. She stood firm as cannons roared. In this compelling new program, we uncover the real story behind the name, separating myth from documented history. We will explore what the historical record tells us - and what it doesn’t. Matthew March is a Pennsylvania native, growing up near Mount Holly Springs. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in History, he became the curator at the Cumberland County Historical Society. In 2009, he became the Education Director, annually augmenting the education of over 10,000 students and citizens with local history programs.

Bring a flashlight and get ready to discover a whole different world as the sun goes down. Join us on October 8 at 5:00 pm for a variety of activity stations, crafts and games will teach children about the fascinating world of night creatures. The event is free and open to all. Registration is desired so we can monitor attendance. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The last of our Black Swallowtail butterflies emerging from a chrysalis. The late season butterflies will lay their eggs and the caterpillars will enter diapause, which is a form of dormancy that will pause their development until spring. Photo: Heather Andrews

Although fall is officially here, there is still plenty going on at Craighead House.The last of the Monarch caterpillars will metamorph into the strong butterflies who will complete the journey south. This Questionmark Butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis) was spotted in the garden at Craighead House for the first time this year. Its name comes from two tiny silver marks underneath each wing which look like a question mark, and it is native to PA. They prefer tree sap and rotting fruit to flower nectar, and their host plants for raising young are Elm and Hackberry trees.
