This Questionmark Butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis) was spotted in the garden at Craighead House for the first time this year. Its name comes from two tiny silver marks underneath each wing which look like a question mark, and it is native to PA. They prefer tree sap and rotting fruit to flower nectar, and their host plants for raising young are Elm and Hackberry trees.

It was another full house as Mark Madison, historian of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, gave a great talk on the vital conservation efforts of twins Frank Jr. and John Craighead, especially on how they saved the Grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park.

If you plant it, they will come! Bees, butterflies, wasps and beetles are enjoying the strong nectar of Mountain Mint, a native plant of PA, and one of the best plants one can grow for pollinators.

The storms held off on Saturday morning as dozens of visitors cooled off in the creek searching for “creek critters” as part of Camp Craighead’s Creek Critters and Stream Health program.

It was a beautiful day when Margaret Young, the Falconry Girl, brought her birds to Craighead House on July 12. Thank you to all the birders and info table volunteers for coming out to educate the community on ‘everything birds’, and supporting this exciting Craighead House major event!

Reminder of upcoming Camp Craighead program this Saturday, August 8th:

Join us on August 8 at 10 am, as we take you on an adventure into the Yellow Breeches Creek looking for macroinvertebrate creatures - or as we like to say, “Creek Critters!” We will also explore other water quality topics with hands-on experiments and activities. Bring water to drink, and appropriate shoes if you want to wade in the creek. Children of all ages are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No reservations required.

Camp Craighead “Creek Critters and Stream Health” Program

One way to assess the health of streams and creeks is to take an inventory of the macroinvertebrate creatures living in them. Join us on August 8 at 10 am, as we take you on an adventure into the Yellow Breeches Creek looking for macroinvertebrate creatures - or as we like to say, “Creek Critters!” We will also explore other water quality topics with hands-on experiments and activities.
