Today is a special day for VFW Commander-in-Chief Carol Whitmore as her membership mission of 101% has been achieved. The Southern Conference proudly led the way, becoming the first, and currently the only, VFW Conference to surpass the Commander-in-Chief's goal, reaching an outstanding 101.75% membership. This remarkable accomplishment reflects the dedication, leadership, and teamwork of our Posts, Districts, and Departments throughout the Conference. Adding to this achievement, six of the VFW's top ten Departments nationally are from the Southern Conference, demonstrating the strength and commitment of our members across the region.

Today, VFW Post 3838 proudly remembers one of the honored names our Post bears: Private First Class Richard Gene Wilson of Cape Girardeau.

While serving as a medic during the Korean War, Pfc. Wilson gave his life trying to rescue a wounded soldier under enemy fire. Though warned not to return, he went back for a fellow soldier who had been left behind. Two days later, he was found beside the man he had gone back to save.

For his extraordinary courage and selfless devotion to others, Pfc. Wilson was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military decoration.

His sacrifice reminds us that the brave, patriotic, fighting spirit of Southeast Missouri did not end on the battlefields of Korea. It still lives today in those who love this land, honor this nation, and stand ready to serve when duty calls.

May we never forget Pfc. Richard Gene Wilson and the standard of courage his name represents.

VFW Post 3838 and our Auxiliary were honored to represent our Post and the greater Cape Girardeau community at the 2026 Department of Missouri VFW State Convention this past weekend.

We are proud to announce that both our Post and Auxiliary received All-State Honors.

This recognition is a direct reflection of the hard work, dedication, and continued service of our members, Auxiliary members, and volunteers who continue to carry forward the mission of the VFW.

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, we are proud to bring this honor home to Cape Girardeau and continue serving our veterans, their families, and our community.

Thank you to everyone who continues to set the standard for VFW Post 3838.

Lunch is served all week at VFW Post 3838, Monday through Friday from 11am to 2pm.
