✨ Today is Indigenous Peoples Day, and we are celebrating the art, heritage, and practice of three influential artists in our collection: Marwin Begaye (Navajo Nation), Philip Young (Mi'kmaq Nation), and Kananginak Pootoogook (Inuit Nunangat).

Marwin Begaye's art and research centers on American Indian identity and pop culture, and he is known for his dazzling bird imagery and incorporation of traditional Navajo stories and patterning into bold, contemporary printmaking. Watch our recent lecture with Marwin here: https://www.massaudubon.org/places-to-explore/museum-of-american-bird-art/art-of-birds-lecture-series

Kananginak Pootoogook, a pioneering Inuit artist from Cape Dorset, worked across media and was also a dedicated conservationist. He was a prominent community leader and was commissioned to create art by several important national organizations, including the World Wildlife Fund.

Philip Young was born in New Brunswick and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His work explores the deep connection of Mi'kmaq communities to land and wildlife. Young is best known for designing the Mi'kmaq Nation's flag and you can see four of his murals at the North American Indian Center Of Boston.
