Congrats to the graduates!!

The Massachusetts Hospital School Foundation would like to congratulate all of the students who graduated from the Brayton School at Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children yesterday. We are so proud of you and wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous future!

What a great day we had at Pappas today! Thanks to the generosity and support of the Canton Garden Club, Pappas received a beautiful, new forest pansy red bud tree in honor of this year's Arbor Day celebration. We are so thankful to the club and especially to Joan Marie Driscoll, its current President, and to Diann Silva, club member, for all their hard work to ensure that Pappas received this beautiful tree.

We planted the tree just beyond the edge of our wonderful new playground, which is named in honor and in memory of Tom ‘Red’ Martin for his years of exemplary service to Pappas. Tom was a dedicated, hardworking, and inspirational member of the hospital’s Board of Trustees.

The playground represents the very best of Tom as he was a gifted athlete and exceled in ice hockey. He attended Boston College where he was a defenseman on the school's hockey team that won the Beanpot in 1959 and in 1961. Tom was also named to the 1960 and '61 college hockey All-America teams and was named to the 1962 US National and 1964 US Olympic teams.

We know Tom would be pleased to see that the structure that bears his name helps our students develop critical physical, social, and emotional skills necessary to gain self-confidence, improve coordination, and advance critical thinking capabilities.

Tom was a remarkable man and we are forever grateful for the contributions he made to Pappas. His lovely, wife, June, who is also a member of the Garden Club, his son, Tim, daughter, Julie, and grandsons Kyle and Billy, joined us for this special celebration. And, we can’t forget Tim’s great-grandson, Connor, who just loved playing on the playground!

A big thanks as well to Fatima Watt, our CEO, Rick Pollara, our Facilities Director and Doug Teasdale, Campus Police Supervisor for all their help in ensuring the safe delivery and planting of the tree.

Thanks to all of our wonderful friends, we have raised $2,675.00 for The Prom is ON! Campaign… WOW! You are amazing and we are so grateful and appreciative to all of you!

We started out with a goal of $2,500 and, of course, you all went above and beyond this… your generosity means our senior students will have an amazing prom this year. There will be music and dancing; there will be beautiful gowns and gorgeous tuxes and decorations that bring to life our theme this year… An Enchanted Forest… it will be a magical evening for them and it’s all because of YOU!

WOW! Another week is almost over and we've received more wonderful and generous gifts from friends who have donated in support of The Prom is ON! campaign... THANK YOU!

We started out with a goal of raising $2,500 to purchase items and supplies for the prom and we have now raised $2,345.00. We are SO close to meeting our goal and with just $155.00 more to go, the light is clearly at the end of the tunnel!

Dear Friends,

On Thursday evening, June 15th, Pappas will host a Prom for its graduating seniors. This will be a magical evening for these young people who have worked so hard over the past four years to earn their high school diplomas.

Due to a dip in funding over these past few years, we find ourselves needing a little help from our friends to provide our students with an evening they will remember forever.

Will you consider making a gift to our 2023 The Prom is ON campaign to help us purchase some items for the event. A gift from you will enable us to purchase:
1. Decorations for the event.

2. Rent gowns and tuxedos for our students.

3. Hire professional hair dressers and makeup artists to help them look their best.

4. Provide a wonderful meal and soft drinks so they will feel strong for all the dancing and socializing they'll be doing.

Whatever you feel you can do will ensure that these hardworking and dedicated students will be able to celebrate their amazing accomplishments while they were here at Pappas.

Pappas recently received a well deserved shout out from Margaret R. Cooke, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. She recently toured the hospital and had this to say:

"I recently had the pleasure of visiting staff at the Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC), one of our four public health hospitals. Located in Canton, PRHC specializes in serving children and young adults with physical and cognitive disabilities as well as chronic and medically complex conditions. Thank you to all of the dedicated staff at PRHC, including their new leadership team helmed by Dr. Fatima Watt, who do so much to support and assist the children they work with in achieving their optimal level of independence".

Pappas is a truly remarkable place with an amazing, dedicated and loving staff who positively impact the lives of its students every day! WAY TO GO, PAPPAS!

With a brand new year, comes a brand new website for the Massachusetts Hospital School Foundation! As you know, the Foundation raises funds in support of Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children, which is located in Canton, MA.

Pappas specializes in providing medical care and comprehensive rehabilitation services to children and young adults with physical disabilities and other medical conditions requiring the need for hospital level care.

Since 1904, the Massachusetts Hospital School Foundation has been raising funds for so that it can offer the students it serves with programs and services it would not otherwise have access to.

Dear Friends,

If you’ve ever wondered what a donation to Pappas will do for our students, just take a look at these photos from a recent performance by the non-profit organization, Young Audiences of Massachusetts. The performer, Ms. Li Liu, is from the city of Shenyang in The Northeast of China. At the age of six she began her acrobatic training, and the following year she was chosen to attend The Chinese National Circus School in the capitol city of Beijing. She has been living in the US and working as a freelance performer since 2003. And here she is today performing traditional Chinese acrobatics for our students - WOW!

It is your donation to Pappas that makes a performance like this possible for our students. And it’s not just the exploration into the world of art that your donation makes possible for these young people. PRHC's new running team off to a great start!

As you know, the 2022 Canton Road Race was held on Sunday, September 25th at the Trillium Brewery in Canton, MA. It was a great success and what made this year’s race even more special was the fact that three of our students got to participate!

Due to a generous grant from the Saucony Run for Good Foundation, the hospital was able to organize and implement a new running club called The Chariots, for students and staff who are interested in the sport of running. The grant allowed Pappas to purchase new jogging strollers for the students, additional equipment to support the team’s races and t-shirts for team members.

The students and staff members registered for the Canton Road Race and had a blast participating in this year’s competition. They were warmly welcomed by all the runners and the huge crowd that gathered to see the race.

Congratulations to the team for successfully completing this year’s race and good luck to them on their next big competition!

Our heartfelt thanks to the Bank of Canton for providing a generous grant to the hospital's Physical Therapy Department so they could purchase two new Rifton Adaptive Tricycles for our students.

The bank has been a long time friend and generous supporter of Pappas and we are deeply grateful to them for their unwavering support and generosity. A special thank you to Stephen P. Costello, President and Chief Executive Officer, for personally delivering the good news (and check!) to Michelle Sweeney, our Director of Physical Therapy.

Our students will have a wonderful time riding their bikes around the hospital grounds as well as through the busy halls of the hospital - THANK YOU BANK OF CANTON!
