Join us for a workday at Zibiwés Nature Area (6125 N. Ridge Road) as we work together to remove invasive species and care for this important natural area. Volunteers will learn about invasive species management, the history of the site, and upcoming restoration work planned for the area.
We will be offering two workday sessions:

Join CNS for a workday at our Pollinator Pathways demonstration garden outside the Canton Township Administration Building!
We’ll be pulling weeds, spreading mulch, and caring for the trees and native plants throughout the garden. Together, we’ll help keep this important pollinator habitat thriving in the heart of Canton.

Time: 9 AM - 12 PM
Tools and gloves will be provided. Come ready with water and sun protection!

Join us for a workday at Morton-Taylor Trailhead (North off Michigan Ave at Morton-Taylor Rd). We will be clipping teasel seed heads to slow the spread of this invasive species. Come on Sunday, August 9th from 1-3 PM or Thursday, August 13th from 6-8 PM. Gloves and tools will be provided; arrive ready with water, bug spray, and sun protection. Earlier this week, we had our quarterly meeting and got to listen to a wonderful talk by Kelly of Momcat Kelly ! Who knew moths were so cool? Kelly brought so many specimens she has acquired. As well, we got to present attendees with all of the possible volunteer opportunities we have available. Last but not least, we have officially announced memberships!! July 20 is going to be a good night!

Kelly Konieczki is joining us to talk moths during National Moth Week. She’s an outdoor educator and pollinator advocate who has been getting Southeast Michigan families genuinely excited about what’s living in their own backyards.

As well, we will start offering memberships to CNS at this meeting. We will talk more in depth about membership, the different tiers and prices, and more at this meeting. We hope to see you there!

Stewardship in Action at the Fellows Creek Wetland Nature Trail

Today, Canton Nature Society spent the morning at the Fellows Creek Wetland Nature Trail removing litter and conducting a site visit to evaluate the property’s Natural Features Inventory, documenting the diverse plants, wildlife, and habitats found throughout the wetland.

The Fellows Creek Wetland was created as part of the Rouge River National Wet Weather Demonstration Project, transforming a formerly channelized section of Fellows Creek into a more natural wetland and floodplain. Today, the wetland helps improve water quality by filtering pollutants and sediment, reduces flooding and streambank erosion by slowing stormwater, and provides important habitat for native wildflowers, pollinators, birds, amphibians, fish, and other wildlife.

Projects like this demonstrate how habitat restoration benefits both people and nature, creating healthier waterways while providing beautiful places for the community to explore and enjoy.

A sincere thank you to the volunteers for their continued dedication to preserving and enhancing Canton’s natural spaces for future generations.
