BABEC is the Bay Area Bioscience Education Community. We are a 510(c)3 nonprofit organization.

We inspire all students to engage in science by empowering teachers. BABEC provides teacher trainings, reagents, lab equipment and curricula.

Thank you to the teachers who participated in the pilot of our new sickle cell disease lab!

Funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), this lab guides students through the analysis of a family pedigree to determine the genotypes of individual family members, connecting genetics concepts to a real-world health context.

We were grateful for the opportunity to partner with teachers in a virtual and hands-on session to introduce the lab ahead of its fall 2026 rollout. Thanks for their thoughtful feedback so we can further refine the lesson!

Come join the fun, learn hands-on biotech that you can implement with your students, earn a stipend (additional stipend for implementation in the 2026-27 school year), and hear about the opportunities for your students at local Community Colleges with Biotech Programs!

Thirty years ago, BABEC began its work in San Mateo County, CA. 💗

The full circle of that moment was not lost on us when we returned to San Mateo High School for a professional development session with teachers from across the county. 🏫

Thank you to every educator who has been part of this journey. Here's to the next 30 years. 🎉
