Today we celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity! 🌏

The 2026 theme, “Acting Locally for Global Impact,” reminds us that what we do in our own communities matters for life everywhere. Based on the UNEP 2024 report For All Life on Earth, here are five actions you can take to protect, restore, and sustainably use nature.

🥬 Grow your own food.
🥗 Adopt a nature-friendly diet.
🌼 Re-wild your garden, balcony, or windows.
💬 Start conversations.
🧠 Be discerning.

Every action counts. Every habitat protected matters. Let’s build a future where people and nature thrive together. 💚

When people ask what we focus on, we always pause, because our work doesn’t live in one neat little box. It touches so many corners of Filipino life.

AFI’s five advocacies are all connected because life is connected. A child cannot learn if they are hungry. A family cannot rebuild if their livelihood is gone. A fisherman cannot feed his community if the sea is dying. A farmer cannot grow if the land keeps getting washed away. A community cannot heal from disaster if help only arrives once its decimated.

So we keep showing up.

For the children.
For the teachers.
For the fisherfolk.
For the farmers.
For the families rebuilding from calamities they did not cause but somehow must survive.
For the Philippines we inherited.
For the Philippines our children will ask us about one day.

And maybe that’s the most honest way we can explain this work:
It breaks our heart.
It expands our heart.

It makes me feel responsible in the most human way.
And it reminds me that hope is not soft.

Hope is infrastructure.
Hope is a meal, a classroom, a mangrove, a fishing boat, a farm, a roof, a rescue kit, a second chance.
Hope is what we build together.

Last month, the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, in partnership with the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of San Francisco, hosted “Longevity Reimagined”, the second installment of the UP Connect Speaker Series.

Held on the 80th anniversary of Philippines-U.S. diplomatic relations, the forum brought together over 50 participants for a forward-looking discussion on the healthy aging, lifelong learning, and holistic well-being of Filipino-Americans.

Deputy Consul General Maria Paz G. Cortes opened the event with a powerful reminder: longevity is not just a health achievement or cost to be managed but a development imperative and an asset to be optimized.

We were honored to hear from Dr. Jessica de Leon (UCSF) on brain health and dementia prevention for Filipino communities, and Dr. Minette Alexandra Sy-Chan, a Stanford Longevity Ambassador, on aligning healthspan with lifespan. An intergenerational panel featuring community leaders Perla Ibarrientos and David Berkowitz closed the evening with reflections on volunteerism, adaptability, and cross-generational collaboration.

Thank you to the National Commission of Senior Citizens for sharing key resources, and to everyone who made this meaningful dialogue possible!

On May 2, a pyroclastic density current from Mayon Volcano sent heavy ash across communities in Albay, forcing families to evacuate and covering roads, homes, farms, and livelihoods in gray. Reports say nearly 200,000 people across 124 villages were affected, with more than 5,400 residents seeking shelter in evacuation centers.

For our kababayans in Albay, this is not just another disaster update. It is a mother packing what she can carry. A child trying to sleep in an evacuation center. A farmer watching months of work disappear beneath ash. A family waiting for the air to clear and for home to feel safe again.

And while we may be oceans away, the Filipino American community has always known how to show up for home.

Let’s stand with the families affected by Mayon’s ongoing unrest and help bring immediate relief, comfort, and hope to those who need it most.

Dear Kapamilya,

This Mother’s Day, I find myself reflecting on a kind of strength we don’t always name, the quiet, steady kind. The kind that shows up in the face of uncertainty, that holds families together, and that continues to give, even when there is little left to give.

2025 has been marked by relentless natural disasters across the Philippines—typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic activity that have deeply affected communities. Yet in every place we’ve reached, we’ve witnessed resilience, compassion, and the enduring spirit of bayanihan.

Through Sagip Kapamilya, the Foundation has delivered essential aid—including food packs, hygiene kits, hot meals, and housing repair materials—to remote and hard-hit areas. Following Typhoon Tino, 2,490 individuals received hot meals across Cebu, and just days later, relief was extended to over 1,000 families in Aurora Province after Typhoon Uwan.

Our work continues in vulnerable regions, supporting earthquake-affected communities in Davao Oriental and Cebu, typhoon-impacted areas in Quezon and Catanduanes, and families displaced by the Mayon eruption in Albay.

And still, even in the midst of crisis, we continue to build for the future.

Through Programa Genio, we invest in long-term solutions through education. At the Ishmael Orillas Farm School, 386 students now have access to farm equipment that helps nourish their families while supporting their education.

At the heart of these stories are mothers, women who rebuild, provide, and uplift entire communities. This Mother’s Day, we honor not only the women who raise families, but those who nurture communities, protect ecosystems, and shape a more hopeful future.

Thank you for standing with us. Your support allows us to respond in times of crisis and help Filipino families not just recover - but thrive.

Happy Mother's Day from all of us at the AFI,
Lisa Cabahug,
Managing Director

💐A Mother’s love has always known how to cross oceans. For so many Filipino families around the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated through phone screens, time zones, voice notes, video calls, and the familiar ache of missing someone who feels like home.

Whether we say it in Tagalog, Ilocano, Cebuano, Waray, Kapampangan, Bicolano, or in the quiet ways we show up for one another, the message is the same: we love you, we miss you, and we are grateful for you. This Mother’s Day, may we remember the mothers near and far. The nanays working abroad, the lolas raising families back home, the aunties who step in, the sisters who nurture, and every person who mothers with sacrifice, softness, and strength.

So here’s your reminder to call her. Text her. Pray for her. Thank her. Tell the mother, or anyone who mothers in your life, exactly how much they mean to you.

In honor of Filipina mothers everywhere, consider making a donation to Bantay Bata and help us continue protecting and caring for mother’s and in turn, children and families in the Philippines and worldwide, especially those affected by the Mayon volcano disaster this past week. 🫶🏽

Happy Mother’s Day to all who mother, wherever in the world you or they may be.

This spring, Fil-Am students from the South San Francisco High School joined AFI on an inspiring field trip to the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco (PCG SF) and the California Academy of Sciences (CAS). This field trip expanded the students’ knowledge of their Philippine heritage beyond adobo and tinikling! 🇵🇭

We are grateful to everyone who made this day possible:
Anne Maris Faris, PCG SF Cultural Officer
Maria Paz Cortez, PCG SF Deputy Consul General
Estefania Phen-Gonzalez, CAS Chief of Education and Learning
Roberts-Wilson, CAS Dean of Education
Jo Ann Kyle, Goldilocks General Manager
Lanie Badian, Goldilocks R&D personnel
Dev Heyrana, Artist and Speaker

We continue to invite students to see themselves as part of a rich legacy worth carrying proudly. When young people see themselves reflected in their history, they begin to imagine their place in the future. ✨

✨ Beauty with a purpose, indeed. ✨

We are deeply honored to have been chosen as the beneficiary of the Beauty in the Heart Pageant for Mrs. Philippines California 2026 and Miss Teen Philippines California 2026, held this past December 31.

This celebration of grace, strength, and Filipina pride was more than just a pageant… it was a testament to the power of community and compassion. Congrats to Malou Parlaqui and Shiloh Diaz! 👑 💛

Our heartfelt thanks to Maribeth Lalongisip and The Serving Core as well as the entire organizing team for championing not just beauty, but impact, with proceeds going toward our mission of uplifting children, families, and communities in need through ABS-CBN Foundation International.

Together, we rise, one crown, one cause at a time. 👑🇵🇭
