January 23, 1777
Moses Dunbar became the only man hanged for high treason in the state of Connecticut. Suspected of disloyalty, Moses was imprisoned in Bristol, Connecticut for two weeks when he escaped and fled to Long Island New York.

He enlisted in the British army and was given a commission as a Captain. Moses then inexplicably returned to Bristol and was arrested while trying to convince other young men to enlist in the Kings Army.
His British commission was found in his pocket and he was quickly indicted for high treason, tried in Hartford, Connecticut on January 23, found guilty and hanged the same day.
According to records, Dunbar's own father offered the rope for the noose.
