As we prepare for our Scholarship Reception tomorrow, we reflect on the Scholarship Reception that was held 19 years ago. In 2007, the Foundation awarded $138,000 in scholarships at a reception at the Bristol Public Library. This year, we are awarding scholarships totaling $368,000 and will be welcoming over 200 people to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Bristol!

In recognition of Juneteenth, the MSCF office will be closed for the day and will re-open on Monday, June 22nd at 8am. This federal holiday celebrates African American freedom and commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. MSCF is proud to participate in this day of reflection while looking into the future.

If you would like to celebrate Juneteenth with your community, United Plainville and the Queen Ann Nzinga Center is holding their fourth annual Juneteenth Celebration in Plainville at Norton Park from 11am to 2pm. The celebration will feature live music, family-friendly activities, local vendors, food trucks, and special guests!

As kids are starting to get out of school for the summer, we can’t help but think of all the fun things they will do in the coming months! Did you know about Invent the Summer?!

Invent the Summer is an organization designed by kids, for kids, that sparks curiosity and innovation by empowering children to build, create, and explore with confidence. MSCF awarded the organization a $2,850 grant last year to support the STEM Summer Workshops in Bristol and Southington for children ages 5-12 years old. These workshops provide hands-on, mentor-led experiences that foster creativity, problem-solving, and confidence in children who may not otherwise have access to high quality STEM programming outside of school. Each year, a team of middle and high school students collaborates to design challenges and create engaging video presentations to inspire the workshop participants. Funding from the grant supported challenge materials, participant incentive prizes, workshop leaders, and program facilitation, ensuring a high-quality experience that empowers children to explore STEM in a fun and supportive environment.

The grant was awarded from two funds: The Bristol Brass General Grant Fund and the JoAnn & David Mills Family Fund, both of which distribute funds to improve the quality of life in the Bristol area, and in the case of the Mills Family Fund, prioritize programs that provide youth with after school and summer activities.

For 20 years, the Plainville Community Fund at MSCF has helped to improve the lives of Plainville residents through grants to local nonprofit organizations, and this year is no exception.

Main Street Community Foundation recently awarded nine grants totaling $14,114 to nine organizations making a difference for Plainville residents. We were honored to recognize several of this year's grant recipients at a special ceremony held last night at Plainville Funeral Home.

Grants were awarded to:
• Chrysalis Center Inc.
• Pequabuck River Watershed Association
• Plainville Community Food Pantry
• Plainville Community Schools
• Plainville Early Learning Center
• Plainville Public Library
• Plainville Senior Center
• Plainville Wind Ensemble
• The Congregational Church of Plainville

The Plainville Community Fund was established as a community endowment at MSCF in 2006 by a group of community leaders in Plainville. This group came together with a simple goal: to enhance the quality of life for Plainville residents. Through this Fund, a permanent resource for charitable programs and projects that benefit the town was created. Since its establishment, $175,000 has been distributed to support local nonprofits and the programs they operate.

This morning at the Stanley P. Bitel Memorial Golf Tournament, Ben Wirth was presented with a $10,000 scholarship from the Stanley P. Bitel Memorial Fund at MSCF. Stan's daughters - Camilla and Darlene - and grandsons - Andres, Nick and Dean - were there to present it.

Ben is a Shelton resident who will be attending UConn in the fall to study mechanical engineering.

The Stanley P. Bitel Memorial Fund was established in 2015 in memory of Stanley P. Bitel, the founder of Rowley Spring and Stamping Corporation in Bristol, CT. Stan personified entrepreneurial spirit, continual learning and self-achievement, and this fund is created for students who embody these characteristics. A scholarship is awarded annually to a resident of Connecticut who is seeking qualifying skilled training in the manufacturing or related industry.
