🌍 20 for 20 Highlight: From child soldier to humanitarian leader

As a young boy in South Sudan, Mayom Mabuong's education was interrupted by war. After losing his father and being forced into military service at age 15, his future seemed uncertain. But Mayom never gave up on his dream of creating a better life, for himself and others.

🎓 With support from the WMI scholarship, Mayom earned degrees in Community Health and Humanitarian & Conflict Studies. Today, he serves with South Sudan's Ministry of Health and leads Errand of Mercy International, delivering emergency humanitarian assistance across the country.

💡 Through WMI's Community Development Grants and President's First Award programs, Mayom has also launched livelihood initiatives that help families build economic stability, and established Community Information Hubs that expand access to reliable information in his home country of South Sudan.

His story is a reminder of the power of a dream colliding with opportunity, ambition, and purpose.

What can a $1,000 grant accomplish?

In Nyeri County, Kenya, it helped turn one scholar's vision into a growing community enterprise with benefits reaching far beyond a single project.

Through a Wells Mountain Initiative Community Development Grant, WMI Alumni Philip Kabiru launched the Kiini Sustainable Beekeeping Initiative, a project designed to create economic opportunities while promoting sustainable beekeeping practices.

The results are already creating ripple effects in his community. So far, 100 kg (220 lbs) of honey has been harvested and sold with more than $800 USD generated in revenue. 🐝 🍯

👥 70 community members trained and directly impacted with five community groups equipped with practical beekeeping skills.

This project has created employment opportunities as there are 15 full-time and 5 part-time staff members, with 3 interns. 💼

What started as a modest investment is now supporting livelihoods, building local skills, creating employment opportunities, and demonstrating a sustainable path for community-led development.

This is the power of investing in local leaders.

When WMI scholars receive support, they don't just transform their own futures, they create opportunities for entire communities.

WMI Zambia Fellowship Community Project

The WMI Zambia Fellowship team kicked off their annual activity plan with a meaningful visit to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Low-Cost Maternity Ward.

The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) is the biggest public hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. It is the largest hospital with 1,655 beds. It is a teaching hospital and, as such, is used to train local medical students, nurses and other health professionals. UTH is the main medical training institution in Zambia for doctors, nurses, clinical officers and other health professionals.

The Zambia Team organised to support new mothers and their little ones, donating essential cleaning supplies to ensure a safe, sanitary, and healthy environment during those essential first days.

🌍 World Environment Day | WMI Alumni Making a Difference

At the Wells Mountain Initiative, we believe education creates leaders who go on to transform their communities.

Today, on World Environment Day, we're proud to celebrate WMI alumnus Edwin Bokai, founder of Youth Action Lead Liberia.

This week, Edwin and his team are bringing community legal empowerment training to the mining-affected communities of Kpeteyea and Kpoyansayea in Liberia's Lofa County.

Through this initiative, local residents are learning how to advocate for their rights, protect their environment, and promote safer, more responsible mining practices.

Environmental sustainability is not only about protecting forests and rivers, it is also about ensuring that communities have the knowledge and tools to safeguard the places they call home.

We are inspired to see WMI scholars and alumni like Edwin turning education into action and creating lasting impact for both people and the planet.

💚 This World Environment Day, we celebrate leaders who are empowering communities, amplifying local voices, and building a more sustainable future for all.

Saraphina grew up in Lusaka, Zambia, in a family facing financial hardship after her parents separated. Despite the challenges, her mother worked hard to keep her in school and later started a small community school for vulnerable children.

Inspired by her mother’s resilience, Saraphina is now studying Education at the University of Zambia through the support of the Wells Mountain Initiative Scholarship Program.

Her dream is to return home and improve the quality of education for children in her community.

✨ Mariam Sulleiman, 2022 WMI Alum, Nigeria ✨

Raised in a Nigerian slum where overcrowded classrooms, financial hardship, and long days of hawking water threatened to derail her education, Mariam Sulleiman has refused to let her circumstances define her future.

📚 Today, she is a PhD researcher in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, advancing groundbreaking research in Human-AI collaboration and AI in Engineering Design after earning degrees from Carnegie Mellon University Africa and Federal University of Technology, Minna Bosso-Campus. Mariam’s remarkable journey recently earned her the prestigious Women in Engineering: Rising Star Award from the SAE Media Group, recognizing her leadership, innovation, and impact as a role model for women in STEM.

🌍 Mariam is also pioneering the integration of 3D printing into African manufacturing, with research accepted at the International Conference on Engineering Design exploring how additive manufacturing and traditional casting methods can modernize industries across the continent.

Beyond her academic achievements, she has remained deeply committed to local service, co-founding the Females in Clean Energy Foundation to expand STEM access, mentorship, and sustainable energy initiatives in underserved Nigerian communities.

As a proud alum of WMI and former Global Advisory Board member, Mariam continues to embody WMI’s mission by transforming opportunity into lasting change.

After losing her first child, Samantha Sibanda went through one of the hardest moments of her life.

But instead of giving up, she chose to fight for people whose voices are often ignored.

Since 2011, Samantha has been advocating for children and persons with disabilities in Zimbabwe, helping them access education, dignity, and opportunity.🌍

With support from the Wells Mountain Initiative CDG Program, her work has now reached over 350 direct beneficiaries.

Because of her, more children with disabilities are getting the chance to learn, grow, and believe in their future.

Samantha's story of leadership shows how one scholarship given to one leader can impact hundreds of lives. The gift of education has ripple effects far beyond the classroom.
