Vermont Family Forests

Vermont Family Forests Vermont Family Forests is dedicated to supporting ecosystem health in local family forests.

Vermont Family Forest Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to whole forest ecosystem health, conservation, management, and culture in a changing climate and challenging economy. We accomplish our work through hands-on education, citizen science, demonstration, research collaboration, and application of optimal conservation practices. Our vision has four central parts:

To observe, und

erstand, and conserve forest ecosystem health;

To practice earth-centered conservation that is holistic, compassionate, scientific, site-specific, and adaptive in quest of an optimal land ethic;

To support careful management of local family forests for ecological, economic, and social benefits; and

To foster a wholehearted forest culture focusing on community well-being, ecological resilience, mutual aid, landholder empowerment, and re-enchantment of the watersheds of home.

E-bikes and equestrians or pack animals are especially hard on natural surface trails and multi-use paths. Their weight displacement is such that they rut and pock trails when pedestrians, hikers, and skiers do not and this leads to increased soil erosion, stream sedimentation, increased peak flows, and stream channel scour. At a minimum, they could be permitted on Forest Highways that meet standards. However, lower standard access roads, paths, and trails require much more attention to detail. On Vermont Statelands, any e-bike and equestrian use should only be permitted on paths and trails that fully comply with applicable standards including the Vermont Acceptable Management Practices. Few access trails and paths actually do fully comply. It would be advisable to complete pilot tests before approving these proposed changes across the board. The last thing Vermont should do is to increase peak storm flow in our forested headwaters.

Native forest product utilization coupled with a cultural regeneration could change Vermont’s economy for the better, make home ownership more accessible, and bring old and young back together. No need for more laws or subsidies.
