Backlight Productions offers weekly classes in theater, music, and dance for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Providing opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to gain education in the arts and perform significant roles in integrated performances Each class provides quality training in the arts and challenges students to reach their full potential then gives them the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in professional-quality productions alongside, and with th

e support of, industry professionals. At Backlight, individuals with IDD learn valuable skills and develop broad experience in the arts. The opportunities provided at Backlight create purpose and community, enhance social skills and help students grow in confidence both on and off the stage. A backlight is a light that shines behind a performer to keep them from blending into the background. At Backlight Productions, the community is given the opportunity to come behind artists with IDD and offer whatever skills and support they can give to help see people of all abilities on the stage.

to when we closed the curtain on our recent production of The Sound of Music. So proud of all our performing artists who “climbed every mountain” to get to the final curtain.

For our Backlight actors (individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities) this wasn’t just a song- it was a declaration.

We’re so thankful that in our most recent production we got to be part of seeing so many people’s dreams realized— artists who have dreamed of being seen & heard, dreamed of playing the lead role, of stepping onto a stage, or dreamed of hearing the applause of a full house.

Bravo, friends. 👏 Let’s keep chasing rainbows and dreaming together. ❤️

“I have never been happier…” 🥹💕 We are honored to be part of Nelia’s life journey. Participating in the arts, especially for Backlight Artists (individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities) means so much… to be part of an Ensemble, to be seen, heard, and celebrated for your accomplishments. Backlight is a place of happiness. 😁

We currently have some remaining spots for performance opportunities in our 2026-2027 season. We are thrilled to have had so many people return and join us for next season (rehearsals begin in September).

🎉 REGISTRATION FOR BACKLIGHT'S 2026–2027 SEASON IS NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! 🎉

Each year, we love welcoming new members to our Backlight Ensemble, and we can't wait to host even more performance opportunities this season! If you're looking for an inclusive, creative, and supportive place to shine, we'd love to have you join us.

We currently have openings for performing artists with IDD in:
⭐ Glee Club
⭐ Dance Team
⭐ Improv & Comedy Club
⭐ Backlight Youth Artist Program (Ages 7–17)
⭐ Audition Slots for Clue (*Note: Advanced Theatre, audition-based experience)
⭐ A limited number of remaining spots in our The Little Mermaid Musical Cast

💡 A Note About Registration: To honor the families who are already part of our Backlight Ensemble, currently registered students always receive first priority for enrollment in classes and performance experiences each season.

If you're interested in joining a Backlight experience (Ex: our Main Stage Musical) but find yourself on the waitlist, we encourage you to still register for one of our other programs! It's a wonderful way to get started at Backlight and ensures you'll receive priority notification—alongside current participants—when registration opens in the future for additional classes and opportunities.

When we say Antonio gave us a lot of options, we mean A LOT. 😄

Some performers just light up in front of the camera, and Antonio brought expression after expression, pose after pose, making it nearly impossible to choose just one photo for our promotional materials. His versatility, creativity, and fun personality were on full display!

Happy Closing to our cast and crew! ⛰️✨

As The Sound of Music takes its final bow, our hearts are full. Thank you to every actor, artist, technician, volunteer, family member, partner (special shout out to our friends at Nashville Opera & hosts at Christ Presbyterian Academy’s Soli Deo Center) and supporter who helped make this inclusive production possible.

Together, we truly climbed every mountain— creating something beautiful and unforgettable. The joy shared through doing this show will stay with us long after the curtain falls….
