"I thought there would be more resistance to the idea of quilting — quilting is thought of as a feminine art. But the guys were really interested in sewing. They were interested in the practical aspect of learning how to use a machine. They were just hungry to make art, and this was what was offered." — Marie-Pierre Py, Re-entry/COSA Coordinator at Interaction: Youth Services & Restorative Justice

This restorative justice-themed quilt was created during workshops with the men incarcerated at the Southern State Correctional Facility. The Vermont Arts Council is proud to support this important project through an FY26 Arts Project Grant. The exhibit, titled "Fractured, Not Broken" is currently on view at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center. Read more in a recent feature from The Marshall Project.

A quilting workshop united men at Vermont’s Southern State Correctional Facility. The result? A museum-quality piece of art.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our Community Cleanup on Monday, October 5!

Local agency staff and community partners came together to clean up two former encampment areas behind Market 32 and the Dollar Store. Volunteers collected an impressive amount of trash, helping make these shared spaces cleaner and safer while respecting the privacy and dignity of people experiencing homelessness.

Kaci Viado, Director of Restorative Justice Programs at Interaction - Youth Services and Restorative Justice, shared what the day meant to her:

"Spending my birthday giving back to the community I love felt incredibly meaningful. I'm grateful to the Southern Vermont Aids Project for the opportunity to show up for each other and make shared spaces a little cleaner and safer. Big shout out to Robin and Heather for coordinating, and for everyone who grabbed some gloves and got to work!"

These photos capture just some of the incredible work accomplished, including the amount of trash collected at one of the two cleanup locations.

Special thanks to the Southern Vermont AIDS Project, the Town for arranging trash removal, and everyone who volunteered their time.

Together, we're building a cleaner, safer and more caring community for everyone!
