MEET THE ARTIST! Our incredible artistic director will be performing in this summer’s chamber music festival! Korean American violinist Angella Ahn is a recitalist, chamber musician, and educator. As the violinist of the Ahn Trio, Angella has performed in over 35 countries and every state in the U.S., at venues as diverse as Buenos Aires’ Teatro Colon, Vienna’s Musikverein, New York’s Lincoln Center, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, Beijing’s Concert Hall, Istanbul’s Aya Irini in Topkapi Palace, and the White House. Additionally, Angella has an impressive discography with her trio. The nine enthusiastically received albums include Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac, released by Sony (No. 8 in the Billboard Charts for 26 weeks) and Dvorak, Suk and Shosta kovich, released by EMI (winner of Germany’s prestigious ECHO Award). A graduate of the Juilliard School, Angella is Associate Professor of Violin and Viola at Montana State University and has given masterclasses throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. Angella is active in the Montana community where she lives, serving her second term on the Montana Arts Council. She is the Artistic Director of Montana Chamber Music, bringing world class chamber music to Montana, and she also serves on the Advisory Board of Opera Montana. Angella plays on a Pietro Antonio Dalla Costa, circa 1760.

Chamber Music Piece of the Week!!! Dvorak’s American Quartet! Not only is this piece one of the most famous and well-known chamber music works, but is often colloquially referenced amongst musicians as a “viola piece” because of the iconic opening viola solo. In this work Dvorak depicts the wide open spaces of the rural Midwest and birdsong, and melodies and rhythms are heavily influenced by African-American spirituals and indigenous folk music.

You can also hear this piece performed this summer at the Montana Chamber Music Summer Festival!! Information about dates and locations are pinned to our page or can be found on our website!

This Thursday we are throwing it back to 2023 in Pony, Montana with the formidable Attacca Quartet. This clip epitomizes a slow, laid back groove. We are so grateful that we get to carry out our mission of bringing top-notch chamber music throughout our beautiful state! In so many places, rural communities never experience classical chamber music. We deeply cherish this portion of our audience and feel honored to connect them with chamber music.

Chamber Music Piece of the Week (your listening homework): Serge Koussevitzky’s “Valse Miniature” for Double Bass and Piano. Koussevitzky was not only the music director of the Boston Symphony and the founder of the Tanglewood Music Center but he was an incredible bass player! Check out this beautiful work-there is even an old recording of Koussevitzky himself playing it!

Be sure to also come see this piece performed by Zachary Cohen and Jean Schneider at our summer festival! Dates and locations can be found on our website.

This week your listening homework is the breathtaking Piano Quartet no. 3 in C Minor by Johannes Brahms. This piece has all your classic characteristics of a Brahms piece- a sense of longing and nostalgia, cross-voicing between the viola and cello, and of course, tons of hemiolas!!! If you are in love with the cello, the beginning of the third movement will be a real treat. Make sure to take a listen to this incredible work! Recording Recommendation: Ensemble Made in Canada

For this Flashback Friday, we’re reflecting on this STUNNING rendition of Florence Price’s Fantasie no. 1 in G minor, performed by Angella Ahn and Julie Gosswiller at the Montana Capitol Rotunda last fall. Be sure to watch to the end to hear the contrast between the lyrical section with charming slides, and the exciting finish to the piece!
