Emerald Necklace Conservancy

Emerald Necklace Conservancy Honoring the Olmsted legacy of parks for all, we bring people together to preserve, protect and advocate for the Emerald Necklace Parks. www.emeraldnecklace.org

The Emerald Necklace Conservancy is a community-supported non-profit founded in 1997 to steward and champion the Emerald Necklace, Boston’s largest park system of seven distinct parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted to connect over a dozen neighborhoods with 1,100 acres of meadows, woodlands, waterways, paths and parkways. Working with civic and neighborhood partners, the Conservancy strengthens

parks, people and policy by advocating for the Emerald Necklace and advancing access, maintenance and restoration, park stewardship and education through volunteer and youth programs and inclusive public programming. The parks serve as a healing respite from the city, a valuable commuting connector and a community convener for more than one million residents and tourists each year, and have taken on a special significance as a safe and socially distanced destination for recreation and reconnection since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are highlighting Tanya, our Major Gifts Officer, this week! With 15 years of experience in non-profit fundraising, Tanya identifies and cultivates prospective donors, strengthens relationships with current supporters, and develops compelling proposals to secure significant philanthropic investment in our mission. Outside of work, Tanya enjoys hiking and exploring parks, baking sourdough bread, foraging fruit from street trees, and playing volleyball. She is continually inspired by urban nature and community green spaces - she recently learned that the Emerald Necklace is one of the first park systems landscape architecture students study—a testament to its significance and a reminder of what a remarkable gem it is for Boston.

The 27th Annual “Studio Without Walls” outdoor exhibition will showcase 15 site-specific sculptures set along Riverway Park in Brookline, beginning May 30 until September 7. The theme “Urban Symphony” invites artists to create works that respond to the rhythms of the city within a natural landscape. For the 3rd year, Gateway Arts, a vibrant creative community dedicated to advancing the careers of artists with disabilities, have collaborated with “Studios Without Walls”—sharing their original artwork on the exhibition’s street banners along Riverway Park in Brookline. Supporting nearly 100 artists with diverse abilities and perspectives, Gateway Arts provides studio space, professional guidance, and opportunities to engage with the wider arts community. Their work spans drawing, painting, sculpture, fiber art, and more—each piece reflecting a unique artistic voice. More details here: www.studioswithoutwalls.org

Introducing Nature Therapy & Forest Bathing Class with Cole Huang! In this free class held on the Charles River Esplanade on May 27 at 6pm, we invite you to slow down and fully experience nature with all our senses. Nature therapy is the practice of immersing yourself in a natural setting and noticing the sights, sounds, textures, and details around you. It is inspired by the Japanese concept of shinrin yoku, meaning “forest bathing,” which describes being surrounded by and absorbed in the atmosphere of the forest.
