On a steamy summer morning, a small crowd gathers in the shadow of the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood. Tourists pause to photograph the 221-foot granite obelisk. Nearby, workers prepare for events commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

And on the southeast corner of the monument grounds, about two dozen archaeologists and volunteers crouch over carefully measured test pits, scraping away thin layers of soil. They are looking for traces of the Battle of Bunker Hill fought here 251 years ago.

Leading the excavation is city archaeologist Joe Bagley (CAS’06), who has long hoped to investigate the battlefield. “We’re standing on one of the most important sites in American history,” says Bagley, surveying the scene.
