"Let me know if you need anything."

It's one of the most well-meaning things you can say to someone who's caregiving. And one of the hardest to actually act on.

The truth? When someone is overwhelmed, they often don't have the bandwidth to figure out what they need, let alone ask for it.

One of the most helpful things you can do is show up; drop off groceries, send a gift card, or take something small completely off their plate.

Not sure where to start? We put together a full guide on how to offer help without overstepping — with specific, practical ideas for every situation. 💙

During AANHPI Heritage Month, we’re honored to share a new episode of The Bridges Between Us featuring Paurvi Bhatt. As Gen X continues to age, care and grow, the number of Asian Americans facing the complexity of caring across generations, locations, languages and traditions often goes unseen and is crucial to recognize.

Paurvi’s story spans generations of caregiving. As the daughter of Indian immigrants, she witnessed her father, in the late 1960s, step into the role of caregiver after her mother was diagnosed with cancer when she was just three years old. Years later, she would become a caregiver herself when her father developed early-onset dementia.

What stands out most in this conversation is how deeply the community shaped their experience. In the absence of nearby family, friends became “uncles and aunties,” helping care for one another through illness, uncertainty, work, parenting, and grief.
The episode also explores something we don’t talk about enough: caregiving roles across generations and cultures, including the often unseen role fathers and men have long played in caring for their families.

At CaringBridge, we know caregiving exists in every community, across borders, even when it isn’t always named or recognized. Stories like Paurvi’s remind us that care has always existed through relationships, cultural traditions, and people showing up for one another in everyday ways.

What's one of the quietest mental health struggles we don't talk about enough?

It's the emotional weight family caregivers and patients carry when the world doesn't know what to say to them. So many of us default to "I'm so sorry." It comes from the heart. But hearing it over and over can start to feel isolating.

The good news? You don't have to find the perfect words to make someone feel less alone. Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can say is also the simplest:

💙 "You're not alone in this."

💙 "I'm thinking of you today."

💙 "I'll bring over groceries this afternoon."

Mental health support often looks like small, steady acts of presence.

Caregiving isn't just about the tasks. It's about the heart behind them.

That's a line from one of our own CaringBridge teammates, who wrote about her husband after she fractured her leg in four places only two weeks after moving into a new house. Here's what she shared with us:

"Surgery, six weeks of recovery, and everything came to a halt. As someone who’s always 'on,' that was the hardest part. My husband took over it all - meals, kids, dogs, logistics, as well as my physical care - but what stayed with me most wasn’t the doing. It was how he showed up. Turning canceled plans into cozy movie nights. Making space for laughter, for normalcy, for me to still feel like myself.

Caregiving isn’t just about the tasks. It’s about the heart behind them.

Thank you to my husband; for caring for me as a patient, and reminding me I’m so much more than one."

Most family caregivers don't call themselves caregivers. They call themselves a husband. A daughter. A best friend. A neighbor who kept showing up.

No one should go through a health journey alone.
Introducing The Bridges Between Us — our new podcast. 🎙️
CaringBridge has always been home to stories of real families navigating health journeys. Now you can hear them in their own words. Each episode, host Andy Thieman sits down with patients, caregivers, and the people who showed up for them, exploring what it means to navigate illness, loss, and recovery with honesty and heart.
These are stories of resilience, compassion, and community. Some moments will feel heavy. Others hopeful. All of them human.
Our first episode is out now — step into the stories behind the care. Listen slowly. Maybe while walking, resting, or sitting with a cup of coffee. The goal isn't to fix or solve. It's to feel a little less alone. 💙
