For the last 30 years there has been a shift in North America, both in the Jewish community and in many other communities — a shift commonly referred to as “disengagement.” Not so long ago, involvement in one’s community was an obligation. With the goal of creating new ways to attract, engage and retain the next generation of Jewish Detroiters, Federation developed NEXTGen Detroit, an innovative p

latform for transforming the community into a vibrant home for young Jews of every background and affiliation. Since its launch in 2012, NEXTGen Detroit has emerged as a national leader of young adult engagement, and is now a model for Federations across North America.

Another summer, another chapter in one of our favorite traditions.

This summer, Jewish Federation of Detroit, along with Tamarack Camps , welcomed its 24th class of campers through the Elaine & Michael Serling Israeli Camper Program (ICP). 127 Israeli teens spent time at camp this year (69 in first session, 58 in second), building friendships, sharing culture and connecting with Jewish Detroit in ways that last far beyond the summer.

And the experience doesn't end when camp does. Before flying back to Israel, campers spend the weekend with host families here in Metro Detroit — an extension of camp that turns a summer program into something closer to family.

None of this happens without the community behind it. Thank you to our host families, our committee co-chairs who work all year to make this program possible and everyone at Tamarack Camps who helped make this summer another one to remember.

Splish Splash Bash may have looked a little different than planned, but the fun didn’t stop! 💦☀️

When the air quality changed our plans, we brought the celebration indoors at The J for an morning filled with smiles, sweet treats, activities, and plenty of summer fun!
