Good Friday afternoon from D1CC's GM, Nąącgepįį a.k.a Tina Brown. Thought I share the rest of the story from our fb cover page. The Ho-Chunk Nation became a host organization for the Master Naturalist Program through UW-Extension a few years back, during the WhiteEagle Administration. I became an instructor for the program, and then went through a 40 hour training to became a Master Naturalist. It is an adult training program that focuses on becoming a volunteer for the environment through stewardship, education or citizen science. It's a program for any adult at any level of ability or knowledge. It's all about learning and volunteerism to help mąą (GrandMother Earth) stay strong and healthy for future generations.
The site in front of D1 is a personal dream come true with the help of 16 Master Naturalist Trainees. Four trainees are Ho-Chunks, the rest from around the state. This project is another step toward diversifying vegetation (reducing sod and the need to mow) around the D1 campus. This project involved hand planting a large variety of over 1600 locally native plants. Pollinators and grasses. We are now carefully applying mulch to each plant with a 6 inch donut away from each plant. Helps control weeds and retain soil moisture. It will take a couple years to fully establish and then it will be a splendid Prairie type site to see. The birds and bees will also love it! A quick and very sincere thank you to the MN trainee volunteers, instructors, Ho-Chunk DNR/staff for the plants and instruction, D1 staff, and everyone who has or will helped this project become a reality 💚. Pihinigigiwina. Enjoy the pics.
