Taylor, Wisconsin, c.1930’s.

🐄🐄🥛🧀🐄
June is Dairy Month, it is a time to celebrate the work of our farmers, and the cows they care for. This photo of Gordon Gunderson and his 1934 Ford Milk Truck, was taken in Taylor Wisconsin, where dairy farming is the bedrock of the community. Gordon Gunderson was a milk hauler in the 1930’s, he is pictured here standing in front of his truck, fully loaded with milk cans. Each one of those cans held 10 gallons of milk. That means that if they were full, there was 80 lbs of milk….plus the weight of the can. A full milk can weighed between 90 and 100 lbs, and the milk hauler had to sling those cans of milk up on the truck by hand. We salute the dairy industry, and all the hard work that goes into bringing cheese and butter to our tables….Thank You Farmers!

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Chuck Torgerson for his generous donation of several original items, including a large safe, office desk, and cash register, from the 1912 era furniture store at 124 Main Street, Black River Falls. The building, which still stands today, was built in 1912 by Franklin Keefe as the Keefe Furniture & Funeral Parlor. It later became the Ness Furniture & Funeral Services in 1945, and in 1962 it became the Torgerson Furniture and later the Torgerson Funeral Home went into its separate location where is today. These donations will be soon showcased at the JCHS Historic Ford Garage History & Research Center. You can play a vital role in preserving Jackson County's rich history by visiting jchs-wi.org for information on ways to provide financial support, get involved, and participate in educational programs. The Carnegie Library Museum is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, and by appointment. Historical research is also available at the JCHS Historic Ford Garage History & Research Center on Wednesdays from 1pm to 4pm, or by appointment. Visit jchs-wi.org for more information.
