Loneliness has no age discrimination.

I hear it more and more—from young people, parents, single adults, older adults… people from every walk of life who are struggling to make real connections.

And we’re quick with the answers.

“Volunteer.”
“Join a church.”
“Find a group.”
“Get involved.”
“Put yourself out there.”

Those aren’t bad suggestions. But sometimes we make it sound so simple when it really isn’t.

You can walk into a room full of people and still feel completely alone.

You can be a single parent who desperately needs a break but has nobody to watch the kids. You can be 22 years old and have never had a real home base or someone you knew would always be there. You can be surrounded by hundreds of people online and still have nobody to call when you have a flat tire, need a hug, or simply need someone to sit beside you on a really crappy day.

Social media can connect us to the entire world, but it can’t replace having someone who actually shows up.

I don’t have the answer to loneliness. I wish I did.

But I do think we need to stop assuming everyone has the same foundation underneath them. Not everyone has family to fall back on. Not everyone has lifelong friends. Not everyone learned how to build relationships because some people have spent most of their lives simply surviving.

So maybe instead of always telling lonely people what they should be doing differently, we can also ask ourselves what WE can do differently.

Invite someone.
Check on someone.
Make room for one more.
Sit down and actually listen.
And when someone is going through a hard season, don’t disappear just because they’re not much fun right now.

And if you are lucky enough to have people who love you through your mess, your mistakes, your hard days and your crises—don’t take them for granted.

Tell them.
Thank them.
Love them back.

Because having people who stay is a bigger gift than we sometimes realize. ❤️

💜✨ A HUGE shout-out to AID Inc—and especially to Patti and her incredible team! ✨💜

How do you really thank someone for years of showing up, caring, serving, helping, encouraging, and simply being there? ❤️

Back in the day, when there were only a handful of us trying to figure out how to help families and make a difference, you were there. And WOW… look at how much has grown since then! 🌱💕

Patti, you and your team have given so much more than time and service. You have given families HOPE. You have shown people that they matter. You have changed lives through kindness, compassion, and good old-fashioned persistence. ❤️

There are probably countless moments you don't even remember anymore—but I guarantee there are families who do. 🥹❤️ That's the beautiful thing about kindness. We don't always get to see how far the ripples travel.

We will miss you, but mostly, we are just incredibly GRATEFUL. Grateful for the partnership. Grateful for the laughs. Grateful for the love. Grateful for every single time you showed up and said, in one way or another, "How can we help?" 💜

May every hour, minute, and second you have spent pouring love and kindness into others somehow find its way right back to you. You certainly deserve it. ✨❤️

Thank you, Patti. Thank you to your team. And thank you, AID Inc, for being part of our story. 💕

Much love! ❤️

P.S. Patti… if retirement ever gets a little too relaxing 😂 and you find yourself wanting to get your feet wet in service every now and then, you know where to find us over here on the south side. 😉💜 Our door—and our hearts—are always open.

All I ever seem to hear anymore are opinions. Not solutions.

Since the pandemic, mental health has become a growing concern here in North Dakota. Homelessness is rising. Families are struggling. And while the cost of nearly everything has gone up—rent, groceries, gas, utilities—North Dakota's minimum wage is still $7.25 an hour.

Think about that.

I work with families who are working two, three, sometimes four jobs just trying to pay rent, put food on the table and keep their heads above water. These aren't people who don't want to work. They are working. And they still can't make it.

And something about that deeply bothers me.

We talk endlessly about millionaires and successful businesses, but I wonder how often we look at the people whose labor helped create that success. If you're an employer who can afford the second home, the third home, the beautiful vacations and the cruises, do you know whether the person working for you can afford dinner tonight? Do you know whether they're one rent increase away from homelessness?

Because there is something terribly wrong when a person can work all day and still not be able to afford the basic necessities of being alive.

I don't have the solution. I wish I did.

But I do know this: we have become very comfortable having boundaries around other people's suffering.

So instead of another argument in the comments, I'm turning the comments off. Your opinion isn't going to feed somebody tonight, pay their rent or change the structure we're living in.

Invest that energy somewhere else.

Check on your family.
Check on your friends.
Check on your neighbors.
And if you're an employer, check on your employees.

Are they safe?
Do they have a place to live?
Can they afford groceries?
Can they put gas in the car to come work for you tomorrow?

Success shouldn't just be measured by how far you made it.

Maybe it should also be measured by how many people had a better chance of making it because you were here.

Because someday, if there really is a gatekeeper at the gates of Heaven, I have a hard time believing the question is going to be:

“How much did you manage to keep for yourself?”

🍄🌿 Sunday’s Parent + Child Gnome Garden Workshop turned out so cute! Watching the parents and kids create their little gnome gardens together was honestly the best part. Tiny houses, moss, mushrooms, glue guns, and a whole lot of creativity 💚
Huge shout out and thank you to Sheila and Ivy for helping make everything come together. The extra touches and creativity made the event feel extra magical for the kids. ✨
